About Me

My music is hard to describe. I call it "Guitar Based Ambient Instrumental" which is a mouth full but that's what it is at it's core. It can be ambient, upbeat, acoustic, spacey, mellow and even ethnic yet it's always changing. Because I am constantly evolving as a musician & person, which I try to reflect in my music, each album has it's own unique feel and identity.
All my life I had loved music & began playing the guitar when I was in Jr. High but I had a hell of a time wrapping my head around writing. However, when I began experiencing chronic facial pain I found myself getting creative. Because music has always been able to influence my mood I began searching for something that could help me relax when the pain was bad. Yet, I found very little that could keep me interested & not just put me to sleep. So I decided to take some of my recent experiments (with the encouragement from Shawn Lopez of FAR...he loved "Yang") and develop them. I found that my songs not only helped me deal with the pain but writing & recording them did too.
So what resulted was my first album, "A Prelude to Balance" (1999) and an intense drive to create more. Since then I've recorded a total of 8 albums. Each one represents me & the place I was in at the time I wrote it. Fortunately, I've been able to share my music with others which has helped many of them deal with stress, pain & insomnia. Others just listen to it when they need to chill out, especially college students. Whatever the reason for listening I encourage you to try it out. It's different & probably unlike any other music you listen to, but that can be a good thing!
Headphones are the best way to listen as I designed these albums to be very personal experiences where there is nothing between you & the music. If you've ever heard the term "Headphone Album" but didn't know what it meant then check out songs like "The Calm Before" & "Letting Go" to see what I mean. Notice how the music seems to 'move' around with almost inaudible effects & melodies weaving their way through your head. It's one of the constant elements in my music because it keeps the listener interested and attentive while still being able to relax.
So let me know what you think & I hope you enjoy listening as much as I do creating.
Thanks, Michael Snyder
