Roots of Deeply Vale................... The idea of Deeply Vale was like all great ideas, crazy, simple and spontaneous - In 1976 a collection of ex art and tech college students in Rochdale, Heywood, Bury and Rossendale together with local hippies, street theatre performers and musicians held a festival in a beautiful greenfield area between these towns and just north of Manchester.------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ -----------------------------------------------------Using PA equipment bought for the first year's headline band Tractor by their mentor John Peel, the festival grew from 300 people in 1976, to 3000 people and half a page in the national music press in 1977 and with New Wave and Rock Against Racism afternoons as part of the seven day 1978 festival [and a superb set from Steve Hillage] 20,000 people headed for Deeply Vale Festivals in 1978 and 1979. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------The Deeply Vale Festival had extremely close links with Tractor the band, Tractor Music their PA hire. company and music shop, and Cargo Recording Studios all based in the same buildings in Rochdale so bands that came to Rochdale to record at the UK's premier indie and punk 16 track studio would often also play at Deeply Vale and a lot of these people also had connections with the late great John Peel who played almost every recording made in Cargo and also every record Tractor issued - John Peel had a special link to Rochdale having worked there in Townhead Mill in the 1960's.We should have a John Peel stage at Deeply Vale 2007 and onwards. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------Involvement and Inspiration in the 1970's- A catalyst for future talent ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ Deeply Vale Festival in the late 1970's involved and inspired countless musicians and people from the arts and media. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ Deeply Vale saw performances from : a new Prestwich Band - The Fall featuring not only Mark E Smith but also future BBC presenter Marc Riley on bass guitar, The Frantic Elevators featuring a young Mick Hucknall, Danny and The Dressmakers featuring future 808 State member Graham Massey, A new wave afternoon - .compered by a Granada TV presenter just about to start a record company called Factory- Tony Wilson -and featuring a band he was nurturing doing their second ever gig Durutti Column, a folk afternoon compered by the other well known Granada TV presenter and musician, politico and folkie Trevor Hyett- the list of bands that appeared on the Deeply Vale Festival stage in those four years reads like a who's who of left field music, The Ruts,Misty In Roots, Exodus,China Street,Steve Hillage,Here and Now , Alternative TV featuring Sniffin Glue magazine's Mark Perry, Nik Turner from Hawkwind, Fast Cars, V2 , Keith Christmas, The Drones, Wilful Damage, Accident on the East Lancs, Tractor, Victor Brox, The Trend , The Donkeys , The Tunes, Spizz Energi, The Out featuring Guitar George Borowski , The Restricted , Body , Visitor 2035 , Pegasus [ featuring future OMD founder Andy McCluskey] Pete Farrow, Bob Williamson, The NotSensibles,Grant Showbiz ,and numerous others. ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------- In amongst the crowd at the festival were the following youngsters who say it inspired them to go into music and the arts, Luke Bainbridge now Deputy Editor of the Observer Music Monthly there as a youngster with his Mum and Dad, Mick Middles Rock Author and Journalist, Andy Rourke from The Smiths, Jimi Goodwin from Doves- aged 8 -there with is Dad and still cites it as his best ever festival experience, Steve Cowen from the Mock Turtles- aged 14 along with future Mock Turtles manager Bob Fisher were there to watch Steve Hillage, another group of three young teenagers from Middleton were in the crowd in 1978 ., Dave Fielding and Reg Smithies who would become guitarists in The Chameleons and Dave Gedge who would found The Wedding Present ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ Spreading the word in 2004/2005/2006 and 2007[ helped in the last year or so also by the ITV documentary and two features in the Sunday Observer] ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ Through the network of people that went to Deeply Vale in the 1970's and went into music and the arts, they have spread the word and other like minded people have got behind the idea for this millenium.Jimi Goodwin from Doves told Badly Drawn Boy and Guy Garvey from Elbow. Badly Drawn boy mentioned it to his current bass player Andy Rourke from the Smiths [ who remembered being in the audience as a teenager at the 70's Deeply Vale Festivals] Guy from Elbow has also been canvassed by Michelle Mullane from BBC GMR, who has also got Johhny Vegas and Phil Jupitus on board. .Clint Boon and Tom Hingley from Inspiral Carpets have also come on board. as has John Robb from Goldblade,Marc Riley, Conrad Murray, [Terry Christian has recently promised Chris Hewitt some input] ,Graham Massey and 808 State,Puressence, Dave Fielding and Mark Burgess of the Chameleons Andy McCluskey of OMD and Grant Showbiz. The list of bands and comperes/radio presenters who want to be involved is growing each day. -------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------- So what is our vision ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ An annual Deeply Vale Greenfield Festival with the feel of Glastonbury [ especially the feel of the greenfield areas and the hippy market areas] to be held every year on a greenfield parkland site in the North West, Summer 2007 Deeply Vale will be later in the year than Glastonbury. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ Keeping it Green and Eco Friendly ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ We want displays/ stalls from alternative energy and environmental groups and we also will be asking all our food traders to use paper plates, paper cups and wooden cutlery so that this can be composted down after the event. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ Encouraging New Musical Talent Nationally and giving New North West Musicians a boost ------------------------------------------------------------ ------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------ What so many of the people that went to Deeply Vale festival in the 1970's were inspired and impressed by, was the fact that we mixed major national headline rock artists with unknown artists from the north west and further afield thus creating a wacky contradiction to a lot of festival stages and a bit of smack in the face for the "established pecking order" that seems to be such a part of rock and roll culture ,a culture that started off as a cutting edge movement from the streets. To try and give some new and alternative acts a chance [ and no ageism here either] Deeply Vale in this new millenium will try and give a break and/or some exposure to some new and alternative bands and musicians and we will encourage music workshop areas and African drummimg etc...................... ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ A Sample from the new Deeply Vale Festivals DVD---------------------------------------------------(note this is only at low res)-------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------Available from all good record shops or alt online from HMV etc
