About Me
Tucson-meets-Provo-meets-Portland....Well, the post grunge years hit like a hammer from a kiddie toolbox on the head of "Devil" Doug Shatterley, 3-gig(maybe 2) professional Molton Leather mascot, ex-lead crooner for the now classic Grunge-a Din. He resided in his old Railworkers Quarters on Hoff Avenue in the Old Pueblo(That's Tucson, for all you snowbirds) watching the green Palo Verde grow and the trains a howling by,checking on the lizards with envy daily, and crouching sometimes in his living room with the 4-track, the pet guitars, the 1977 Auroura family style Hammond, penning tunes of the Tucson loner or the wanna-be loner.....Playing some now defunct Tucson bars and coffeeshops here and there with the electric, the deluxe reverb(must have tremelo!) and his voice, all in a very 'Tucson Casual' kind of way.
There were always Dreams of the Great Northwest for Doug, though. Ah, the tall green pines, the snowcapped peaks, The Pendelton shirts, the nights at the lodge by the fireside, a place where winter clothes might mean something(if you dont mind a little mold and mildew on them) a place to really test the innards of the psyche and the effects of SAD(that's seasonal affective disorder for all you desert rats), and a place where Twin Peaks reruns just might live at every corner, well maybe at least north of oregon. So Mr. Shatterley packed the old 69 VW bus and took flight on the rusted wings, to the great Metropolis of Portland, Oregon in search of the drummer that would make up the duo Shatterville.
Sloppy Rolls, who reportedly travelled to Portland via llama, met up with Doug at the Paradox Cafe, and they worked side by side in 'the galley', under the harsh conditions of marinated tofu and whoever's pick it was for music at the time...After close watch of each others cooking skills and deliberating over heaps of biscuits, almond gravy and Sriracha sauce, they found that maybe some music was in order. Sloppy, a guitarist, bassist, songster, blooming sound engineer/recorder extrordinaire, and soon to be kick-ass drummer, was up to join the population of the tattered town called Shatterville.
Ah, the great rehearsal space just beyond Montgomery Park was where the two made their first attempt at rocking the wasteland, full of coffee and rocking garag-ey blue wanna be post waitsian countrified desert psychedelic sandstorms, and now 5 years later, Shatterville, are still making eggs and maybe some tofu here and there for the people and still attempting to rock the wastelands.......
There are two full length bits of music from Shatterville, on cd. The first, self-titled, and the soon to be released on CD-R near you, The World is... Look for them at our shows(a.k.a the town meetin'), we might have 'em there. Oh, and you can find the track 'aching dawn' from the first one on Failing Records compilation of Portland music Vol 3 as well...see you at a town meeting soon!
