About Me

I'm happily married and a mom to a beautiful and 2 year old girl. I grew up in San Diego- but moved to Farmersville August 04. I graduated from San Diego State with a BA in Liberal Studies and a specialization in American Indian Studies. I have a multiple subject teaching credential from Cal State Teach, Fresno State campus. I was recently hired as a Kindergarten Teacher. I'm Muscogee Creek through my mother's side- my father Hungarian and German. Growing up, I spent my childhood being raised on and off a Kumeyaay Indian reservation by my Stepdad; learning the language and culture as he and other elders whove since passed, taught me. No matter where I go, I always feel like I am returning home when I go back to Kumeyaay land and smell that sweet smell of the sagebrush in the air. My mother's family is from the Perdido Bay Area- bordering Florida and Alabama, as well as Oklahoma- I have great aunts still back there that I hope to visit one day. Through my mother's side, we are decendants from the Allen, Hi, Crain and Ingram family line. I have a great interest in geneology and would like to meet new relations. My husband and I dance at Powwow's most weekends and we are both fancy dancers- Men's and Women's. We bead and sew our own regalia. I am very passionate about my Indian Herritage and dancing. There is nothing better than being at a powwwow Saturday night when everyone is amped up to dance and wearing their finest. I love being at a powwow and seeing friends and adopted family, I even love seeing people who I don't often talk to for whatever reason- whether they like me or not, I like to see them because it makes me feel like the world is still spinning and life is still going on as usual. I love meeting new people and making new friends- I am not the kind of person who rejects making a new friend, I usually say hi to just about everyone I pass but can be shy, when conversing with someone I do not know well. There may be things that I don't like about some people, but, there are not many people that I don't like. I can be a little shy about opening up and letting loose because I try to show respect but once you get to know me, I have an edgy sense of humor that can get me in trouble. I am usually slow to forget but quick to forgive and usually give everyone another chance, even if they were not friendly with me in the beginning.

Pow Wow People that I see but don't get a chance to talk to-friends,

Music:

Good pow wow music- songs that make you wanna shake! Bird songs of the Kumeyaay, Good ol' Stomp Dance Songs like Stomp Dance Blues, And about every other kind of music, I miss my rock stations from San Diego- 91X, but love hitting those LA Powwows and listening to KROCK on the way. Books:

The Celestine Prophecy, The Great Human Diasporas, Perma Red

Heroes:

My husband and daughter- they make me want to give the world to them, they make me complete and we have a lot of fun together as a family-always playing around Ursaloria Kanuhoe- She is so light on her feet that it is truely inspiring. My good friend, Shirley Hill- a spiritual fancy shawler from Canada- she is one of the kindest and most compassionate, gentlest of people that I've ever known and I'm glad to have a special connection with her. Thomas Phillips- A fellow Creek, good MC, educator, it is people like him that push you to excel, really, their whole family, I really have respect for. When I think I how I would like to carry myself as an Indian woman, I think of Roseanne Abramson, a No. Traditional Bucskin dancer who carries herself in so much beauty and respect. Melanie Matthews- I remember seeing her dance when I was younger, when I think about how a prestiguos person should carry themselves, I think about her, for as known and intelligent as she is, she does not have a big head at all, I am glad to have her friendship becuase she is the kind of person that makes you feel very comfortable to say how you feel and not be judged, you know that whatever you tell her, she is not going to use it against you. I wish I was able to see her more often. Cynthia Lee- One of my Master Teachers who helped me tremendously and gave me the confidence I needed to apply for my job when I was afraid to go for it. Her example has showed me to help others who are new to the profession of teaching and just starting out- to support eachother's learning as we would for the children we are teaching.
