reviews
At times reminiscent of the likes of Hood, Arab strap or Joeyfat, this arrived in June 2008. Wild Dogs is the work of two guys from Maidstone in Kent, UK. The two tracks we picked from their demo are a neat showcase of the quality and range of their material - one a slow-burner of machine rhythms, guitars, organ chords and disaffected vocals; the other an even more lyrically caustic wandering over a hollowed-out and spartan backdrop of echoing guitar notes and minimal drumming. Creeping and very very cool.

'This looks good, satisfying hand made cover with a stencil silhouette of a a wild dog, worth having just for the art of the tactile cover and the stitched together card that makes that cover. You kind of know when something like this turns up with so much simple crafted care that the music inside is going to be equally as good, equally as considered and cared about. And it is. Three simple, clever, complex, quiet tracks. Three whispered pieces of fine art, three pieces of sleepy languid thoughtful beauty. Wild Dogs In Winter are from Maidstone, Southern England, their letter came with a line drawing of a stag. The opening track hums in a delicate post-rock way, very much a song though, a beautifully textured whispered structured unassumingly delicately beautiful song called Good ‘ol Burnt Eyes... Can’t quite get that title but everything else makes perfectly beautiful sense. Every sound considered, every brush stroke, every pen mark, every delicate glitch and string plucked... everything. Simple art, simple music, beautifully clever.'

'No other current UK band makes being so utterly heartbroken and forlorn sound so appealing. A beautiful, honest sound with delightfully haunting vocals and clever understated hooks. The lyrics make me feel like a beginner at the english language. i love this band'

'Wild Dogs in Winter arrive on the scene with their debut CD, a three track EP on Mine, All Mine! Records. Before I continue, I must let you know that this is available for free download, so it should be transferring to your hard drive as you read this, because the music is quite simply great. The Kent duo (who take care of everything from the synth and programming to vocals and live instruments) have created a short, but no doubt impresisve, EP to introduce themselves to the scene. It starts with “Good Ol' Burnt Eyes”, an intro track that is both creative and captivating. The combination of sound in this opening track is something that charms the listener right away. From chiming dual guitars, intense bass, and eclectic rhythms to the enchanting vocals that are pulled off perfectly. One big facet which makes their sound work is surely the vocals. While they can be a little self indulgent at times (a monologue in the second track “Em-i-nor”, is the big culprit here) they nevertheless always seem to add something to the sound. This instrument is never overused or forced and it keeps the whole EP flowing in the right direction. The final track is a more ambient affair than the previous two, but it still holds onto the properties that made the previous tracks so great - perhaps a sign of the duo's experimentation in terms of their final sound. This is a positive, as they can try different things to an extent within a three track CD and still maintain quality and flow. There are still small cracks, which for a debut, can be only natural. You do get the feeling the band have not yet totally decided on what direction they want their soudn to go in. However this is the nature of a debut CD, and because all three songs a so well executed, this point fails to be a decisive factor on my opinion. Overall, it is hard to label Wild Dogs in Winter's sound, as they seem to take something from every genre. Electronica, Folk, and of course post-rock are all ingredients that they use wisely to create a fresh and interesting combination. In addition, its free! This EP is a resounding success, and I eagerly anticipate the future of Wild Dogs in Winter'
