Flash Countdown
On January 16th, I filed as Democratic candidate for the office of Cherokee County Sheriff. I am excited about this year’s election, and even more excited to begin the hard work that will need to be done to establish a professional law enforcement agency that puts the “service†back in public service.I am a fifth generation resident of Cherokee County, and have had the honor of serving the citizens for over eight years. I served nearly five years with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, where I was given the opportunity to serve in many different capacities including, correctional officer, dispatch, and a deputy sheriff. I was also able to serve in the supervisory positions of sergeant of patrol, K-9 narcotic team, and a sergeant detective. In November 2004, I was offered a patrol position with the City of Columbus, which I accepted. Shortly after being hired by the City of Columbus, I was promoted to the position of master patrol officer. I gladly served with the Columbus Police Department until September 2006, when I was offered a position with the City of Baxter Springs. I seized that opportunity and continue to proudly serve the residents of Baxter Springs.I am dedicated to serving the citizens of Cherokee County, and while employed by these law enforcement agencies, I also took the opportunity to work on a part-time basis for the cities of Galena, Scammon, and Weir.During this time, I have attended and graduated from the University of Kansas’ law enforcement training center, and obtained an Associates Degree in Applied Science of Criminal Justice from Labette Community College in Parsons, Kansas. This is in addition to the state mandated forty-hour minimum continuing education courses to maintain certification. Some of these courses include, but are not limited to: United States Drug Enforcement Agency Narcotics Investigators Course, Arson and Explosive Investigations, Evidence and Property Management, Driving While Intoxicated Detection and Field Sobriety Course, Doppler Radar Instructor, Emergency Medical Dispatch, Asset Forfeiture, and Clandestine Laboratory Investigations, to name only a few.I intend on utilizing this training and experience to establish a sheriff’s office comprised of public servants who share my dedication, energy, and desire to provide a true service to the citizens of Cherokee County. And, my staff will understand quickly how important I feel about treating our citizens courteously and with respect. This, they will see by my actions, not just my words. We will also be relentless in the pursuit of criminals, making it clear that Cherokee County is no longer a safe haven for them. This must be done while maintaining financial responsibility, keeping in mind that for every dollar spent, I am accountable to the taxpayers. I believe this can be accomplished by eliminating frivolous spending, maintaining control over county credit cards, and seeking state and federal grants. I will take a common sense approach to spending your taxes. If we can’t afford a certain purchase, we will simply do without. Finally, as your sheriff, I will maintain an open door policy. Citizens should have access to their elected officials, and the sheriff is no different. It is important to have an open line of communication with the residents to discuss their concerns. However, this is not just necessary for citizens. It is also imperative to work closely with county commissioners, the county attorney, judges, city officials, and other departments within the county. We are all elected to serve the good of the public, and the public suffers when we can’t work together.I thank you for the opportunity to share some of my background and goals. Again, I look forward to this election and serving the citizens of Cherokee County as your sheriff. Thank you for you support. David Groves
