With Indo-jazz fusion group Divya which featured keyboard whiz Dinshah Sanjana, vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, mridangamist P. Sridhar & Faizal and Taufiq Qureshi (sons of the great maestro Allah Rakha) on tablas, he released 2 albums, one recorded in Budapest, Hungary and performed at top jazz festivals & clubs including the Montmartre in Denmark, Fasching in Sweden, Rijksmuseum in Holland, Jazz Jamboree in Poland, Debrechen Jazz Festival, Jazz Yatra in India & in the USSR and Kazakhistan. They were a prize winner at the International Jazz Competition held in Hoeil-aart, Belgium.
Soon Roy was invited to join the legendary Bob Marley’s Wailers band and toured with them for years, performing at hundreds of concerts & festivals in the U.S, Europe, South America & the Carribean, headlining with bands like Black Uhuru, Maxi Priest, Arrested Development, Third World, Big Mountain, Defunkt, Simply Red, Kool and the Gang & many others, besides recording in Kingston, Jamaica.
He then composed & arranged his own project which featured world reknowned musicians including trumpeter Randy Brecker, keyboardist Adam Holzman (Miles Davis, Chaka Khan), saxophonists Clive Stevens & Jay Rodriguez (Groove Collective), pianist Rachel Z (Al Di Meola, Wayne Shorter), percussionist Sammy Figueroa, trombonist Frank Lacy, legendary Indian flautist Hari Prasad Chaurasia and sarangi maestro Ustad Sultan Khan.
Roy has recorded & played many concerts with India's primo jazz musician Louiz Banks and world class rhythm section - drummer Ranjit Barot & bassist Karl Peters. He has also toured with Fleetwood Mac founder/guitarist Jeremey Spencer.
In New York he recorded new original material, a heady combination of hiphop, jazz & rap with traditional Indian instrumentation over his drum, bass & synth programing. It features Bronx rapper Mugga Mega Bugged with vocals by Angel (Michael Jackson, Springsteen).The songs were mixed by platinum award-winning engineer Tom Swift, known for his work with AC/DC, B B King, Charles Mingus & others. In 2002 he did a series of jazz-electronica concerts with British saxophonist Clive Stevens and percussionist Bondo Fernandes.
Roy also scored the music for international award-winning film director Govind Nihalani's (Drohkaal, Tamas, Ardh Satya) movie Deham. It includes his contemporary arrangement of a ghazal sung by maestro Jagjit Singh and vocals by Hindustani classical exponent Shuba Mudgal. The film has won many awards including Best Asian Film 2002 at the Goteborg Film Festival in Sweden.
He has worked as a first call sessions guitarist on countless television and radio jingles and Bollywood film scores & composed music for theatre, corporate & documentary films & written jingles for Coca-Cola, Wrigley's, the Taj group of luxury hotels, TNT Network (Singapore), Channel 9 Gold, JWT (Kenya), Maori Television (NZ) & a host of others. He also scored Jan Steffan's film The Godmachine currently screening on Documentary Channel.
Roy lives in Auckland, New Zealand. He does music production & teaches in his home studio & is currently completing work on a new album. He has played with The Wailers at their concerts in NZ, on Brooke Fraser's multi platinum selling album 'What to do with daylight', been featured on TV1's Asia Down Under, gigs with various outfits & is currently touring with reggae band House Of Shem who recently released their debut album Keep Rising.
His most recent release is Horizontal Life under the studio production name of Buzz Bahdur. Typically, the music draws from a large palette of sound fonts & aural colors, incorporating elements of nu jazz, chill-out, lounge, ambient, sufi, reggae & electronica. The cd has been recieving rave reviews in top music journals & songs been aired on well known radio stations in the U.S, Europe etc & released on the compilation cd Pan Global Electro Lounge - vol 1 in the U.S & Europe.
