It is very apparent from the onset of this album that Joe Martinez’s arrangement of the music is a well crafted platform for listeners to hear Gus Guthrie’s soulful voice. A major emphasis has been placed on doing what is best for each song as a whole, rather than as an attempt to showcase particular talents. It took a couple of years to complete the subtle layering of vocals with instruments like the congas, mandolin, accordion, guitar, piano, bass and drums. Sometimes it was the decision to strip instruments away that helped shape the seemingly simple and pure sound. It is the sum of parts that make Gathering Change so special.
