PUT AN IMAGE AT THE TOP OF YOUR PAGE InvisibleMan is a hip-hop duo based in Pretoria, South Africa. A collaboration that began in mid-2006, the group brings together the talents of two members of separate hip-hop groups - Second Sun, of The Innovators and Undahdogg of Sixth Element.
Partly inspired by the classic novel, The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellis, the concept of InvisibleMan arose from the author’s claim that he is an “invisible man.†His invisibility, he says, is not a physical condition—he is not literally invisible—but is rather the result of the refusal of others to see him. He says that because of his invisibility, he has been hiding from the world, living underground – a life that he has taken on in order to write his story.
InvisibleMan’s first album, The Invisible Man, is the result of the ‘underground’ writings of this dynamic pair brought to light. Their offering takes this idea and applies it to personal and social issues ranging from the struggle of an unsigned artist to land paying gigs, to an ordinary ‘un-connected’ South African’s view of the ever-elusive Black Economic Empowerment, and even the despair of a young man whose feelings are invisible to the object of his affections.
The story told in the album is also one of introspection. While InvisibleMan may be invisible to others, they take their audience on a journey which leads them to learn to see themselves more clearly than ever before. Tracks like “One Shot†and “Reason for Being†tell of the moment of realisation that no matter how blind society may be to you, you have a responsibility to make your presence felt. Although you can undermine your enemies from a position of invisibility, you cannot make significant changes to the world – nor to yourself. InvisibleMan have developed a concept which aims to contrast the blindness of society with the invisibility of the individual. Their songs investigate people’s tendency to wilfully avoid seeing and confronting the truth to show how one person becomes invisible because one is blind. At the same time, the message is also intended to show that, while invisibility can bring disempowerment, it can also bring freedom and mobility. For InvisibleMan, it is the freedom they derive from their anonymity that enables them to tell their story, and that of young people like them.
