Powerhouse was formed as the result of the decline of another band - Shady Grove. Featuring the same members. Playing the same type of music... Confused? Well, a lot of people close to Mikkelsen, Bruun and Olrik were in the summer of 2003. Shady Grove had metamorphed into a revamped Krackerjack - a previous band of René's - leaving the trio with an longing for the extended blues jams they had mastered so well in the Grove. This resulted in the formation of Powerhouse in June of 2003. A name much more indentifying with the intensity of the trio's performances.
The debut of Powerhouse was less than glamorous - but never the less INTENSE! At a folk music festival in the small Danish village of Uldum, Powerhouse made their premiere appearance on July 5th 2003 following a group of accordion players. Playing in a tent with the average age of 60! Needless to say, they cleared the tent before the end of the first song. After 5 songs the power was cut! Some debut...
But the will and insistance of the trio was not as easily turned off as the power at Uldum Gademusik Festival. Even though the three musicians were beginning to have their hands full with their primary band Krackerjack, the blues was never too far out of sight. On October 10th they played a triumphant show at Café X in Fredericia, Denmark. The crowd was sparse, but impressed. The atmosphere was smoking. The night was magic. The music - a POWERHOUSE!
The earliest foundations of the band was laid as far back as August 2000, when old friends René and Rasmus decided to form an ass kicking powertrio. Both keen fans of Cream, Hendrix, Mountain and newer acts like Gov't Mule, the two had previously played in the blues-rock combo, Painted Horse in 1996-97. Rasmus' Jack Bruce-like bass, that just seems to be all over the place constantly, combined with René's fiery guitar - reminiscent of Warren Haynes and Rory Gallagher - was the starting point of the band Strange Daze, which also featured drummer Per Madsen. Per, being older than his band mates, decided to call it a day in the fall of 2001, and his replacement, Lars Olrik, indeed proved a worthy successor. The band name changed to Shady Grove in early 2002, and as Krackerjack reared its ugly head in 2003, the Grove was silently put to sleep... But something remained... The POWER!!!
During the following years, much of the trios time was spent on Krackerjack – including the release of two albums in 2005 and 2006 – and Powerhouse rarely gigged. However, due to Olriks departure from Krackerjack in late ’06, the band has decided to make 2007 the year of Powerhouse with gigs being booked and a tentative album release.
