Katherine Louise Harris was in fact born in a small mining village in the depths of the Welsh valleys, which may explain her constant reference to her impoverished background (whilst she cradles her macbook pro, listening to her ipod, encased in a Louis Vuitton leather case).
At the age of 16, Katie found solace in creative subjects, which conveniently coincided with her awareness of the fact she is incapable of reading more than 9 words in a row without requiring a cigarette. Katie thrived on the knowledge that she could do the bare minimum to achieve the grades required of her to continue her education in an art school (2 D’s, a colouring in (inside the lines) and a history of depression). Katie craved release from the elitist private school system she had become familiar with over the previous 7 years, and moved to The Glasgow School of Art, which this year celebrates its 10th ethnic student since 1907.
Continuing the rebellious attitude she had founded at Forest, Katie was not a favourite amongst the authority at the GS of A. Before her arrival, the word ‘cunt’ was referred to as ‘the c word’, opinions were merely a distant dream and the average haircut would have been comparable with that of a very, very poor person.
After two and a half years of ‘learning’, Katie decided to move her creativity and negativity to another continent – The U of S. Whilst studying at Parsons School of Design, she was spotted by a notable film scout and ask to participate in two projects. The first, entitled ‘Sister Act 3 – Backin’ the Habit’, saw Harris collaborate with some of her favourite actors - Whoopi Goldburg, Geoff Goldbloom and the Jewish one from ‘The Wonder Years’. In this film, Katie portrayed a young, lovable drug dealing prostitute from the East End of London, who assisted Whoopi in saving the local church parish from bankruptcy through substantial sales of crack cocaine, heroin and Benolyn.
The second film, entitled ‘Get thin or die tryin’’, saw Harris and Cent document the journey of 5 Brooklyn residents, battling with a variety of eating disorders, with hysterical yet horrifying consequences. Due to the overwhelming rapport between 50 and Katie, another film, entitled ‘Cent of a Woman’ is due to go into production in 2008 – a story that mimics the classic story of Romeo and Juliet coupled with the complex racial dynamic featured in ‘Save the Last Dance’, with slightly less bullshit.
After Katie’s trip to the ‘grande pomme’, she returned to Glasgow to continue her studies in Product Design. After completing her dissertation, ‘Katie Harris – The Life and Times’, her final grade is somewhat debatable, the outcome of which will be decided at the end of this academic term...
