About Me

Too Far North was founded late last century by Martyn McFadden and Tim Madgwick as a non profit making record label with a remit to nurture musical talent within the North East of England.
After a few years hard graft releasing singles and albums by a number of local acts, we naturally developed into more live work, simply because it was more of a laugh and usually involved a great night out. Around this time Tim left the company and in came Adam Offord. The partnership of Offord and McFadden decided to concentrate solely on gig promotion and residencies at venues throughout the North East were soon secured and established.
We owe our moniker to Johny Tate, the talented multi instrumentalist, producer and DJ. Tate ran a club night of the same name during the mid 90s, upstairs at The Telegraph in Newcastle. Whilst organising his opening night and still looking for a title to promote it by, Johny was turned down by a southern based DJ who refused to travel up to the North East to perform for him because it was “too far north.”
At the time of our inception we felt that conceited comment also encapsulated the attitude of London based A&R men towards bands in our region. By then Johny had wound down his club night to concentrate his time in the recording studio and was happy for the name of Too Far North “to be used to help the region’s musical talent.”
Since then the band scene in the North East has prospered and Maximo Park, The Twang and The Futureheads have graced the Too Far North stage and many other of our acts have progressed and the capital’s music industry have often flocked to our gigs. But we have not turned our back on our roots and we have continued to promote numerous up and coming bands from throughout the North East via our showcase nights.
In recent years the company has grown and we could not operate so many gigs without the help of Steven Aston, Steven Brown and Jenny Dewar, who are ably assisted by our team of soundmen: Olly, Dirk and Jerry.
So if you're looking for a good night out watching great bands sweat out catchy rhythms, then check out one of our nights. Or if you're looking to arrange a gig for a band, send us your MySpace link to [email protected] and we’ll give you a listen.....
