Neighborhood bars are rarely as culturally savvy as Lincoln’s Roadhouse, an old-fashioned tavern in Wash Park that distinguishes itself in two ways -- free live Southern-fried rockabilly and blues on weekends and traditional Cajun cuisine that rates among the best in Denver. It may look like just a decades-old biker bar, but come for one of the high-octane rock shows -- or just try a spoonful of the etoufee -- and you’ll understand what makes Lincoln’s a special place, as far as beer halls go.
The location has been a roadhouse since the 1920s, and for 30 years was the Crimson & Gold, Denver’s first 3.2 bar. In 1999, Jimbob and David recreated it as Lincoln’s, which became increasingly popular for its no-cover live music (Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons) and acclaimed comfort food. Four years later, the Road House added chef Bobby Poirrier, who brought with him the same authentic Acadian cuisine he’d produced for 17 years at Breckenridge’s Cajun Cafe. The Lincoln’s new menu (po’ boys, gumbo, Lafayette bread pudding, etc.) retains some of the signature items from the old one (meat loaf burger, pot roast sandwich); a four-course meal will run you under $30.
The place is worth seeking out.
