Lightness Ascending is the ambient music project of David Janssen. Unlike David's other projects The Darkening Scale and Renaldo and the Loaf , the music of Lightness Ascending moves slowly. The music you can hear on this page are all excerpts from much longer pieces. Although long fascinated by music that creates and atmosphere or ambience, it was David's wife, Jane, who encouraged him to explore this area of music making. As a Healer Jane was interested in having some music she could use as a background for her healing work. Much music purported to be for healing work, relaxation or meditation is in fact too 'busy'. What is required is a music that simply creates a background ambience that can be sustained for 30 minutes or more. So, don't expect anything dramatic to happen; as they say in Advaita , this is no-thing happening, silence appearing as sound.
