i learned to play guitar by watching and listening to my dad, whose main influences are mississippi john hurt, tom rush, and traditional folk songs sung by just about everyone. my head began to fill up with fragments: stagolee was a bad man, wasn’t that a mighty flood, i bet on the grey mare, the water is wide, the angels laid him away, etcetera...my fingers longed for the fancy fingerpicking style of the old country blues. i began listening to the amazing guitarwork of joni mitchell, and discovered other tunings, the capo, and making up your own chords. and then liz phair and elliott smith came along, and taught me how to be closer to my guitar.vocally, i love harmonies. simon and garfunkel trained me.
i am currently experimenting with banjo.
i don’t have any ambitions to be famous, or get rich making music. i do it because if i didn’t do it i’d be a much worse person. it channels my emotions in a perfect way, and when i perform, i get the attention and love that i need in one beautiful burst. i’m blessed with a pretty good ear and and a pretty good voice and the knowledge that music is one of the most important parts of my life.if you enjoy my songs, then you are enjoying a part of me, and for that, i thank you.
