So a little about me. Well, I grew up in New York City. When I was young I would sneak into my brother's room and listen to his jazz albums. I developed a taste for jazz. When I got older, I sang Doo Wop on the street corner with my buddies. When we sang if you went off key you'd get punched in the chest. I learned to sing ... I always wondered what it would be like to be able to sing some of my favorite songs with a group of great jazz musicians. In the making of this album my wish came true.
The fact that I happened to know the legendary Buddy Fo before we began was just pure luck. That he agreed to produce this CD was truly a great honor. His guidance, his caring, his vision have made this all happen. The players, the technicians and everyone involved were guided by Buddy's vision. His knowledge of the business, his big ears, his ability to make everyone comfortable and the respect he showed to the players and the music have all been a great lesson to me.
Mike Montana from Las Vegas, one of the most talented and patient people I have ever me, wrote the arrangements for the four songs recorded at the Honolulu sessions. The other arrangements were a collaborative effort of a great quartet of talented mad men from up country Maui led by Brian Cuomo. We had a great time at both sessions and I was humbled by the talent and generosity of all the players and technicians. Thanks guys.
This all began two years ago when I discussed the possibility of making an album with my boss Blackie Bell. He said "Let's do it." Two years later...We've done it!
A great blues singer used to say "If you like what you hear tell everybody you know...if you don't like it don't tell nobody."
