Babyslave

About Me

Babyslave began as a one-off collaboration between Valentine Records' former chief antagonist Joe Ladyboy and Lunette Records' artiste-in-residence Hypnotique.
Originally meeting in 1994 among the cathedrals and mills of the rural East Midlands and united by their disaffection with the juvenile and vulgar around them - they embarked on varied musical missions throughout the latter stages of the 20th Century.
For Miss Hypnotique with indie rockers and Peel favourites Dawn of the Replicants, Cold War afficionados Heist, noise prog rockers Nought, Gong-offshoot project Zorch and analogue junkies The Radio Science Orchestra amongst others. Interesting encounters ensued with her role as a leading ambassador of the theremin, including stints on BBC2, Channel 4, Channel 5 and demonstration events in Europe for the late Bob Moog.
Meanwhile, Joe Ladyboy busied himself in the North unearthing Manchester's finest misanthropic talent and unleashing a series of mini-albums, EPs, events and compilations helping to introduce the world to acts like Cartwheel, Performance, Shirokuma and iForward Russia! - not to mention solo projects, remixes collaborations, and a stint as DJ-in-residence at Manchester’s fondly remembered avant-pop clubnight To Amy With Love
United again in 2006, their initial mission was to throw their varied skills and experience into a test tube, add hubble+bubble+toil+trouble, allow to mutate, then enjoy. Hypnotique’s analogue obsession and classical woodwind sounds create a unique reaction with Joe’s cut'n'paste sampledelica, reverse guitar and downbeat electro-punk production. A concoction of instant gratification – William Burrough's Naked Lunch as musical hors d’ouvres.
A first (self-titled) album was released on Valentine Records just before the label's closure in December 2006. Picking up the story in 2007 Babyslave have recently welcomed aboard the talents of Dr Charles Blake (aka Charlie Machine/ Mansion/X) - a highly experienced multimedia art-poet and founding member of The Monochrome Set. Making their debut live appearance with the Subterfuge Arts group at Islington Mill in June 2007 Babyslave are currently hard at work on a new album and series of EPs to follow. More weird and wonderful live appearances are also in the pipeline. Watch this space...
