This is Maureen Spranza's 12th year teaching music in the San Lorenzo Unified School District and she is currently teaching Grades 1-5 at Hillside Elementary in San Leandro. She has over 20 years of teaching experience in Music including working in the San Lorenzo Unified School District at Lorenzo Manor Elementary, Colonial Acres, Royal Sunset, East Bay Arts and Edendale; at St. Felicitas and St. John Catholic Schools, and as an instructor at Music Unlimited in San Leandro, Fiat School of Music in Pinole, and Mills College, Oakland. This has enabled her to postpone getting a real job. Maureen earned her MFA at Mills College in Electronic Music and Recording Media with an emphasis in composition. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music in Jazz Composition from Berklee College of Music in Boston. Her teaching credential is from Chapman University in Concord and is currently working on her PhD in Education from http://www.capella.edu with a Specialization in Professional Studies. As someone who accepts different epistemologically justified levels of explanation, she uses a complex combination of behavioral, cognitive and motivational theories in her practice. Ms. Spranza especially enjoys using project-based learning in her curriculum design. Following a mainly constructivist philosophy, she uses a learner-centered environment when possible and a pragmatic rationale. Using what she calls the Self-Assembly Model, Ms. Spranza designs the instruction based on the nine San Lorenzo Unified School District Music Standards: Singing; Playing Instruments; Improvising; Composing; Reading and Notating Music; Listening and Analyzing Music; Evaluating Music; Understanding Relationships between Music, the other Arts and Disciplines Outside the Arts; and Understanding Music in Relation to History and Culture. She loves to incorporate technology into the curriculum and feels lucky to work in a district that is a Microsoft Center of Excellence. In order that music does not remain a mystery in her classroom, the use of organizing conjecture helps the children see experience as transactional and are able to examine it from a holistic point of view. She has presented educational workshops for and has published articles for teachers. As a musician, she has worked in local venues, and her music has appeared on the radio, television, CD, and the internet. She has performed with musicians such as Vijay Iyer, Anthony Braxton, MC Hammer, Luciana Souza, Lloyd Nibbs (Skatalites), Fred Lonberg-Holm, Andy Borger (Norah Jones), Stuart Popejoy, Aaron Stewart, Sheila Sofian, William Calhoun (Living Color), Sean Kennerly (Samiam) and Joey Cheezhee. She has been listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who Among American Women, Who’s Who of American Education and the International Who’s Who Among Professional Educators. She lives in San Leandro with her daughters Natasha (12) and Haley (9).

Proverbs 12:
15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
but a wise man listens to advice.
16 The vexation of a fool is known at once,
but the prudent ignores an insult.
