About Me

This page is dedicated to the Vox AC 100 Super Deluxe amplifier, which Vox launched in 1963, thereby responding to the British invasion's need for ever greater loudness. It was among the first 100 watt amp designs in the world. The Beatles got their first three rigs in 1964 and started using them during their American tour in 1965. One can see them rather prominently on stage at the Shea gig. In combination with the so called T-100 enclosure (2x15"), the AC 100 was perhaps the finest bass amp of its time. Yet the Beatles weren't the only British band to rely on the AC 100s sheer power. During most of 1965, The Who would have had up to four rigs lined up on either side of the Moon. Sadly, they were gradually lessened by Townshend. Many other bands, including the Stones, the Yardbirds etc. used AC 100s. However, according to "The Vox Story", the Beatle rig was never put into full serial production, which according to "The Vox Guidebook" is bollocks.... . At any rate, there aren't many of these things around. The head was more popular with bass players than with gutarists, which accounts for today's rarity of these rigs. Finding an original JMI Beatle cabinet is virtually impossible nowadays. Hence collectors often put their AC 100 heads on Thomas Organ Beatle cabinets. Playing the amplifier is something for the deaf. Its 100 watts feel more like 1000 and it easily outrivals any 100w Marshall. It must have been a great sense of relief for The Beatles when Vox gave them these amps during the heyday of Beatlemania. Enjoy the pictures of my pride, the 1965 AC 100 Super Deluxe!
