About Me

Remembering Susan Strasberg, one of the most beautiful talented and nicest stars of stage, screen and television.********* Susan Strasberg was born in New York City on May 22, 1938. Her father was Lee Strasberg, acting coach at the famed Actor's Theater in New York; Mom was Paula Strasberg, who would later become worldwide famous as MM's coach and confident. In 1953, Susan made her acting debut in an episode of the "Goodyear Television Playhouse" when she was just 15 years old. However, her true stage debut was on Broadway in the title role of "Diary of Anne Frank" in 1955.She made her film debut also in 1955 in "The Cobweb" with an incredible cast, including Richard Widmark and Gloria Grahame. She became very well known for the massive hit "Picnic" in 1956 with William Holden and Kim Novak. Her role as Kim's "plain"(???) sister, Millie, very nearly stole the film, and the final scene of her waving to the departing Novak, can still bring a tear to the eye. In 1957,returning to Broadway, Susan co-starred with Richard Burton in "Time Remembered", whom she had a doomed romance with. In 1958, Susan returned to the big screen in "Stage Struck" and the following year, appeared in the acclaimed Italian film, "Kapo", for which she won an Italian Oscar.Oddly ,though, her career went into decline in the latter 60s, and she appeared in several low budget now cult films, including "The Trip"(1966), "Psychout", "The Name of the game is kill"(both 1968),"Psycho Sisters"(1972) and "The Manitou"(1978)with Stella Stevens. A brief moment of re-acclaim came with Susan's brief but memorable appearance opposite Tom Berenger in "In Praise of Older Women"(1978).In 1980, Susan had a bestseller with her autobiography, "Bittersweet", and in the 1990s, she penned "Marilyn and Me", about her friendship with the legendary Miss Monroe. She also appeared in three TV documentaries about her old friend:MARILYN MONROE: BEYOND THE LEGEND,REMEMBERING MARILYN, and MARILYN MONROE: LIFE AFTER DEATH (1994). She had a tempestuous marriage to James Dean type actor, Christopher Jones, from 1965 through 1968, and had a child with Jones, named Jennifer. On January 21, 1999, Susan lost her struggle with breast cancer. She had no health insurance, and had been forced to sell items given to her by her Mother and Marilyn to pay huge medical bills. This stunning, broken woman died on a friend's couch in New York City. Most people are confused as to why such a beautiful talented and charismatic woman never achieved the superstar status she initially seemed so destined for.
