Born Marlon Brown, the youngest of 5 brothers (and 1 sister) in Kingston, Jamaica Zulu Blak immigrated to Canada at the tender age of 10 years old, but traveled back to Jamaica frequently since. He became interested in music (artistically) at the age of 16 and drew inspiration from sources like Bob Marley, Buju Banton, Buccaneer, Bounty Killer... to name a few; as well as local Montreal talents like Mikey Dangerous and Sampaloo.
"Encouraged by 2 older brothers, I started practicing, lyrically at the age of 17, but a tragic family situation took my focus away from practicing dancehall, and music on a whole. 2 Years down the line (in 1998), I started studying, and writing poetry in an English course. A friend I knew from High School gave me a Bob Marley CD collection with songs that Bob made from his teenage years, to music he made towards the end of his life."
Music regained its place with Zulu who now began listening, challenging, and sometime remixing other artists’ music. "One of my habits would be to listen to the ‘riddim’ and try to find out what the person who made the riddim was trying to say. Then I would try to put words to it. I would never write down the songs, so after a couple of weeks I would forget it. As time passed, I started writing them down and performing them for friends and family." They all now encourage Zulu to put his talent to brave use.
"I started questioning the dancehall scene in North-America and vowed that in 2006 the world would get to know me, Zulu Blak."
Zulu Blak won the 1st Canadian Reggae Star competition that was held on Saturday June 10, 2006 live in Montreal at the Showcase. His grand prize includes Shocking Vibes record deal (Beenie Man/Tanto Metro & Devonte); Music video deal; open for Kymani Marley at the Montreal Intl.
