Hugh Laurie concocts an uproarious cocktail of comic zingers and over-the-top action in this 'ripping spoof of the spy genre' (Vanity fair)--- the irresistible tale of a former Scots Guard-turned-hired gun, a freelance soldier of fortune who also happens to be one heck of a nice guy.
About ten years ago:
Cold-blooded murder just isn’t my cup of tea. Offered a bundle to assassinate an American industrialist, I opted to warn the intended victim instead— a good deed that soon took a bad turn. Quicker than I could down a shot of my favourite whiskey, I was bashing heads with a Buddha statue, matching wits with evil billionaires, and putting my life (among other things) in the hands of a bevy of femme fatales. Up against rogue CIA agents, wanna-be terrorists, and an arms dealer looking to make a high-tech killing, I was out to save the leggy lady I had come to love . . . and prevent an international bloodbath to boot.
Hugh Laurie wrote a book about all this, and was kind enough to let me be his narrator.
I adore a single-malt scotch, and I prefer my martinis as dry as they come. I smoke too many Marlboros, and my favourite thing to do is ride my motorbike. I've cleaned my flat twice in my life, I never comb my hair, and I always wear grey socks. I get a very 'shruggy' feeling just before parachute jumps, and I know everything there is to know about stripping, cleaning, loading, and firing guns. I was in the Scots Guards for several years, where I was honourably discharged with the rank of Captain. I sleep as much as I can, and I'm much too observant for my own good. These are the things about me that I think are important, and I think the fact that I find them important should tell you a lot more about who I am than just what's written here would on its own.

About the author:
Hugh Laurie was born in Oxford, England on 11th June, 1959. He attended the Dragon School, as well as Eton and Cambridge University, where he studied anthropolgy. He was also an excellent oarsman (earning a blue), but during the course of his studies, he contracted glandular fever (mononucleosis) and was forced to stop rowing. He turned to acting after that, and became president of the Cambridge Footlights. Other members included Emma Thompson (who he dated for a time), Tony Slattery, and Stephen Fry, who is his best friend and Godparent to his children. He married Jo Green in 1989, and they have three children together.
Hugh is currently starring in the hit television series
House. Laurie previously starred in a number of groundbreaking British television comedy series, including
A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Blackadder, and
Jeeves and Wooster, and films such as
Peter's Friends, Stuart Little 1 & 2, 101 Dalmations, Maybe Baby, Girl From Rio, and
Sense and Sensibility.
In addition to acting, Laurie has directed television programs and commercials, composed and recorded numerous original songs, and written articles for London's
The Daily Telegraph. Hugh is also being honoured by the Queen, as a member of the OBE (Order of the British Empire).
Hugh is an avid motorcyclist, and rides a Triumph Scrambler (other bikes he's owned include a Triumph Bonneville and a BMW-- he's owned at least ten motorbikes in his life). Mr Laurie is also a talented musician, and plays piano, guitar, harmonica, and drums (and it is rumoured he plays saxophone as well), and he sings. He is also currently the keyboard player for Band from TV, and is also in a jazz band in England (Poor White Trash and the Little Big Horns).
The Gun Seller (1996) is his first novel.
The Paper Soldier, the second book in the series, is slated for release in Autumn 2007.
The Gun Seller has also been adapted as a screenplay, and will (hopefully) eventually be made into a feature film.
