About Me
Nita Slater began her career in the spotlight at the age of 12, as a runway and photographic model for a local department store chain in Pennsylvania. Always having a passion for music, at 16, she and a number of peers discovered her strong voice and asked her to join her first rock and roll band. Shortly thereafter, she also began performing with a local musical comedy theatre group, playing a number of lead and supporting roles, all of which brought her rave reviews for talents in acting and dance, as well as voice. Nita eventually moved on to perform full time with a number of rock and variety bands, traveling the east coast from Virginia to Maine.Nita eventually moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where for two consecutive years she was voted “Best Female Vocalist†and “Best Female Front Person in the Mid-Atlantic†by readers of Music Monthly Magazine, and voted “Sweetheart of the Year†by Maryland Musician Magazine. In 1990, she appeared in the Baltimore-produced musical production of "Beehive", in which she shared the stage with ex-Supreme vocalist, Mary Wilson. Her voice could also be heard on a number of jingles and radio commercials produced by Clean Cuts, Top Hat and Flipside Sound Studios, whose clients have included Maryland National Bank and John Elway Ford of Colorado. In 1991, Nita was asked to join a new project led by Crack the Sky vocalist/guitarist and founder, John Palumbo. In 1992, their debut CD, Cruel Shoes was released by RCA.After several years in the rock arena, Nita found a passion for country music and in 1994 was named “Baltimore’s Rising Star†by Country Plus Magazine for her performances in The Nita Rae Slater Band. After relocating once again, this time to the Northern Virginia/DC area, Nita joined the 10-piece, function/variety band Kaleidoscope in 1996, in which she had the honor of performing at the Inaugural Ball in 2001, and for ex-President and First Lady, Gerald and Betty Ford in 1998 in Vail, Colorado. She was also employed during this time as vocal coach at Contemporary Music Center.Currently, Nita's voice can be heard on the soon to be released John Palumbo CD, Citizen X.Having spent the last couple of years doing primarily studio work, Nita has returned to the Philadelphia area, where we’re hoping she’ll soon return to the stage. Her incredible versatility, impressive range, strong belt, natural knack for harmonies, and ability to move easily from hard rock/heavy metal to blues to country to jazz standards and show tunes all make her a huge asset to any live band or studio production team.
