Vanessa Leonardo was born and raised in Staten Island, New York by an Ecuadorian mother and a Sicilian father. With dreams of becoming a novelist, Vanessa began writing poems, short stories, and lyrics at a young age. At the age of 13, she started taking piano lessons from her best friend's mother. Vanessa began songwriting soonafter by trying to mimic the stylings of the artist who has inspired her most out of any others: Sarah Mclachlan. However, it wasn't until she picked up the guitar several years later that her music found its medium and sound. She began teaching herself chords and rhythms from popular songs and after a few weeks, she had a basic knowledge of the guitar and began to write. Now, three years later, she has begun to network her music and perform at various bars in downtown Manhattan. Her music is meant to be honest, passionate, and pure in every aspect: from the lyrics to the music to the melody. Her inspirations span a panoply of artists in a variety of genres. Artists such as Sarah Mclachlan, Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow, Sia, Heather Nova, Natalie Imbruglia, The Weepies, Shawn Colvin, and Dido are especially meaningful to her because of their musics' raw, emotional element. Vanessa attempts to convey the darknest, most solemn feelings that are difficult to express, and she hopes her music can inspire others to pursue their art while touching their souls.
