In the fly 90s, Swingin' Beef was a presence in Rochester's original music scene, playing Sly Stone influenced party funk. The band was Dan Koontz's and Alan Murphy's project, originally formed as a party group for their Eastman School of Music classmates to dance to. The group went on to record and perform until they disbanded in '97. Street Level was Alan Murphy's way of picking up where Swingin' Beef left off. Murphy began recording with drummer / percussionist Dave Carlisle in '98, and recording was completed in '03. Patricia Diute and Matt Overlan completed the artwork in '05, and the Street Level release party was held at Richmond's in Rochester on April 22nd, 2006. You could say that Murphy and Street Level are "in it for the long haul..." Some of the Swingin' Beef alumni that are on the Street Level album are Jason Titus and Brother Wilson on guitar, Eric "E-Bass" Johnson on (yes) bass, and Dave "Swingin' Beef" Carlisle on drums. Among the many other musicians on the Street Level debut are horn players Quinn Lawrence and Devon Trammel, bassist Marvin Parker, guitarist Eric Katerle, and vocalist Mary Ellen Hayden. Street Level's live shows incorporate the P-Funk party asthetic with jazz-funk improv / jamming. Current performers in Street Level include Marvin Parker on bass, Jason Titus on guitar, Robbie Gissendanner and Michael Parker on drums, Devon Trammel and Eric Little on trumpet, Jake Glasgow and Dominec Calabrese on saxaphones, Nic Finzer on trombone, and Marcus Parker on raps.
