WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF IT...
"This should be well-received by surf fanatics around the world; all the essential ingredients are here - lotsa reverb, clever tunes, tight arrangements and solid playing throughout. Good job!"
Paul Johnson - Belairs, Surfaris (www.pjmoto.com)
"Made in Antigua truly rocks! The songs are unique and original and masterfully played by a band that really understands surf music. I recommend this album!"
Danny Amis aka Daddy-O Grande (www.daddyogrande.com)
"I've listened to the new CD several times. Nice job and something all of you can be proud of. I like "Kawaramachi" and, even more, "Hurricane Season". Anybody who loves drippy, reverbed guitar will enjoy the album."
John Blair - Jon & The Nightriders, Eliminators
"What can I say abou the new CD from the Wadadli Riders? They may be from the Caribbean but their style of surf music is like taking off on a glassy ten foot wave at the Huntington Beach Pier. Each song is like screaming across the face of a mammoth wave locked in the curl. You can feel the spray in your face listening to this CD. If you want instrumental surf, this is the real deal."
Tim Ferrill - Eliminators' management
"Made In Antigua is a splendid release from Wadadli Riders, the only surfband in Antigua. There are a number of really superb tracks here. The sound is very traditional, but the melodies are influenced by the locale. Wonderful."
Phil Dirt - ReverbCentral.com ( check out the review track by track )
"I've been listening to this CD all week, and enjoy it more on each spin. It is like an early 1960's release with great playing, and great sound! Lorenzo and Niki pay tribute to a lot of great players on this record while making it sound totally fresh. Highly recommended."
Rev Hank - Urban Surf Kings
"(...) The first title Dwell At 10 is a big clue, and the reverb control must indeed have been set to max as this is a great surf blast with a melody to match. With its cascading runs and tremoloed chords it harks back to the best of the vintage surf classics and is the album's 'hit single'. With similar ingredients JBL D-130F does come close, but the rest of the tracks were never going to match it. However, they all have plenty of that great guitar sound and are well up to standard album fare. The Killer Wave and Hurricane Season bubble away neatly, Calm Before A Storm has a mellow start before launching into a blizzard of double-picking and there's a gently surf ballad to close with in Going My Wave."
Alan Taylor - Pipeline Instrumental Review N. 81
About WADADLI RIDERS
What the hell is "Wadadli"? Well, it is the ancient name of the Caribbean island of Antigua where the band was actually formed in 2005 by Lorenzo Surfer Joe, Niki and Claudio "Il Santo". The guys, just moved from Italy to the island, wanted to give life to the very first surf band from the Caribbean, and so it is now. Claudio went back to Italy after 1 year and since then the band has been comin' and goin' between Europe and the Caribbean to play and record surf music.
The current line-up showcases Lorenzo, switching between guitar and drums, and Niki on bass, hosting various guest musicians.
On Summer 2008 Wadadli Riders have been touring with Daddy-O Grande of Los Straitjackets both in Italy and California joining bands like Pollo del Mar, The Tomorrow Men, The Detonators and Los Venturas. The band has also been the main guest at the Surfer Joe Summer Festival 2008, playing the saturday night show featuring John Blair (Jon & The Nightriders) for a few songs, and the Hawaiian Party of the Summer Jamboree 2008 in Senigallia (Italy).
The live activity of the band is concentrated on surf parties and rock 'n' roll events playing original music and great surf music classics.
On July 2008 the band releases Surf Music Kings Of The Caribbean a nice 3-songs EP which receives good reviews and sells a very limited amount of copies during the same summer.
The first complete album of Wadadli Riders, Made In Antigua, is released on July 2009 and produced in Antigua by Surfer Joe Music (www.surferjoemusic.com). It is probably representing the first surf music recording ever made in the Caribbean!
About SURF MUSIC KINGS OF THE CARIBBEAN
Phil Dirt's (ReverbCentral.com) review of "Surf Music Kings Of The Caribbean"
Well now, this is one cool release. If you are a fan of the Surfites, you'll love this. Not that it sounds like them, but the sense of playful melody and arranging is similarly strong. very good writing, and nicely produced sound. I can't wait for a whole album!
Total vote: **** (4 stars on 5)
Hurricane Season (*****): A rippin' double picked opening brings forth a very cool number with muted surf rhythm and a sparkling melody. "Hurricane Season" is a really cool track with an infectious sound. Adventure, optimism, and style! Solid bass and great drums support the guitar work.
Tetsuwan Atomu (****): Distant drums and a howling tape echo play havoc on the peaceful waters. "Tetsuwan Atomu" starts off with a noisy attack, and ends up with a great melody and rhythmic surf charm. A very nice track!
Brown Recluse (****): "Brown Recluse" uses a tastefully employed melody riff to carry of its charm, but it's the cool chords that come out of the unexpected silences that really hook you. Lot's of spunk and charm, and plenty of listening pleasure. The muted dripping notes are just too cool!
