Leonoff Orchestra was founded in 2002 in Warsaw by Igor Spolski, Tomasz Glowacki and a group of their friends. The band’s line-up has undergone many changes over the years. Currently it’s a collaboration of students and graduates of various Warsaw colleges. The band has played a couple dozen concerts, mainly in Warsaw and other towns nearby. It has also taken part in many festivals around Poland.
Leonoff group is one of the most frequently live performing bands on the Warsaw alternative music scene. It has also cooperated with former Rybki (now Zig Zag) cabaret and one of the most interesting Warsaw theatre groups Teatr Konsekwentny.
Leonoff’s trademark is a unique atmosphere during the gigs, lots of singing and music making together with the audience, and a two-hour set, which often goes on for much longer when the band starts to improvise and the public cries for more. The kind of music that Leonoff represents is difficult to describe in one word; the band tends to mix their favourite genres and draw inspiration from the treasure trove of pop culture adapting their findings to their own needs. Among the the band’s influences one can find 1930s New Orleans jazz, ska, reggae, rock, avant-pop, house, contemporary Polish jazz and sometimes even techno music. However, the core of Leonoff’s music are the lyrics and arrangements that encourage people to dance and enjoy the band’s performance. The band’s line-up is fairly populated - it constitutes of 8 or 9 band members depending on the scale of the event:Izabela Lamik - keyboards, vocals, cello
Igor Spolski - vocals, guitars, percussion
Globi Wan-Kenobi - guitars
Stefan Estrada - drums
Michal Lamza - double bass, keyboards
