Washington DC native Will Davis developed a love for jazz fairly early in life when during his preadolescent days his father played recordings by such greats as John Coltrane, Ray Charles and Horace Silver. Piano lessons were initially provided by his maternal grandfather and then during his teen years he was taught by an elderly woman from Liberia, West Africa.During this time he also came under the influence of more jazz artists that he was hearing on the radio as well as through his father's record collection (Grover Washington, Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, etc.) Because Will was living in Liberia, West Africa at this time he also heard such African greats as Prince Nico, Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba. Upon returning to the US, Will his mother and his brothers lived briefly with his maternal grandparents again. His grandfather Milton C. Lewis was a multi_instrumentalist although his primary instrument was piano. Mr. Lewis having been an accomplished musician during the war years maintained a battalion band and taught many of the men under his command to play. He knew that Will was musically capable so he again attempted to spark interest in Will in the piano. However, the grandson was more affected with the emerging R&B, smooth jazz and contemporary gospel scenes of the 80s. So Will' s interest in music became sporadic.
However, it was after hearing the diversity that was emerging in the 90s with urban gospel, that he began to consider improving his keyboard skills and part time music ministry. So to this day he practices and sheds as much as possible.
