Wright, Sr. was born May 12, 1941 in Fayette, Alabama, to the late Elvertis Wright and Corene Henry. He received his formative education in Fayette County Training School in Fayette, Alabama, where he graduated in 1958. He holds several degrees from outstanding educational institutions: a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology from Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama, 1962; a Master of Arts Degree in Library & Informational Science from the State University of New York, Geneseo, New York, 1970; and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the Union Institute of Cincinnati, Ohio, 1977. He was thirty-five (35) years old when he earned his PhD.Bishop Wright grew up in the First Baptist Church in Fayette, Alabama. At the age of eleven, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior in June 1952, and was subsequently filled with the Holy Ghost later than same year under the leadership of the late Mother Cora Johnson and his late pastor, Elder Floyd Smith at Victory Temple Church of God in Christ in Fayette, Alabama. He has held numerous positions in the church since he was saved over fifty (50) years ago. Such positions include Sunday School Superintendent, District Sunday School Superintendent, trustee board member, deacon, minister and elder. In 1956, he attended his first National Holy Convocation celebrating the €œGolden Jubilee€? convocation in Memphis, TN.He received his call into the gospel ministry in 1979 and was ordained an Elder in 1981, under the leadership of the late Elder Henry Newkirk at the Powerhouse Church of God in Christ in Rochester, New York, where he served as trustee board member and chairman of the building committee for the New Powerhouse Church. In October 1981, he became founder and pastor of Progressive Church of God in Christ in Rochester, New York. Within three (3) years, they purchased a church which now value close to $1 million dollars. In August 2006 the church moved to it's new complex, The New Progressive Cathedral COGIC Complex, housing a 1000+ Seat Sanctuary, A School Building, A Annex, and Office Building. The church owns in excess of 68 acres of land; which is to be used for the development of a retreat and youth center.In 1985, he was appointed as Administrative Assistant to Bishop Leroy Robert Anderson, Former Jurisdictional Bishop of Western New York First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction and General Board Member, where he served faithfully for eighteen (18) years. In August 2003, he served as Administrative Assistant to the Presiding Prelate, Bishop Gilbert Earl Patterson, Interim Jurisdictional Bishop of Western New York First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction. In 2004 Bishop Wright was elected & consecrated Jurisdictional Prelate of New York Western First Jurisdiction in the Church of God in Christ, now with over 95 Churches.Bishop Wright has extensive experience in Library Management. He was employed with the Rochester Public Library System in Rochester, New York, where he served as director of the Phillis Wheatley Library, 1969 to 1987; he was previously employed as an Assistant Librarian at the Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Alabama. , 1968-1969; and the Gary Public Library System as branch librarian in Gary, Indiana, 1966 to 1968; Teacher-Librarian at St. Jude Educational Institute, Montgomery, Alabama, 1962-1966. He is also an educator, lecturer and writer. He has published numerous publications as an educator.His civic and community involvement includes: member of the American Library Association, where he served as president of the American Library Association Black Caucus; chairman of the Scholarship & Continuing Education Committee; member of the New York Library Association; he was invited by the Mayor to serve on the Race Relations committee for the City of Rochester, New York; presently serve as a member of numerous board and committees.Bishop Wright married the former Mary Law in 1963 until her demise in October 1993. They are the parents of three children: James, Coretta and Michael Jason, and five (5) grandchildren, Victoria, Mary, Ariel,Jordan, and Trent,Jr. In April, 1998, he married the former Maritha Daniels.
