Utopian Skank is a six-piece ska band from Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada. It was first created by current members Andrew Furlong, Andrew Melo, Savic Panylyk, and Eric Boyd after being inspired by watching "School of Rock" in theaters. They started out as a Pop Rock group, then slowly moved to a more Ska sound after Furlong and Savic became avid listeners of the genre. The group went through a few drummer change-outs, as well as role switching. Originally, Furlong was on drums, but switched to Rhythm Guitar. They then moved on to Tyson Glass as a drummer, who was a friend from school. They decided he sucked, so they got rid of him and took on James Schaaf. James Schaaf has since left the band due to his decided hating of music. Beau joined the band September of 2005 because of the band's need for a vocalist. Prior to this, Savic was on vocals, but he also had to play Keyboard and Saxophone, so he was looking for a break. Marc Dotto joined as a drummer in late 2006 and he and Beau played in front of a live audience for the first time with the band at the ABJ High School 2006 Talent Show. The band had only played talent shows and grade 9 grads prior to this. They are now thinking of scrapping their entire set and reworking it with more serious lyrics.
