IN THE BEGINNING....................Michael Flythe began playing drums at the early age of three years old. By the age of eight he, along with his friends - Bernard Wright & Kevin Osbourne, started a group called the Jr. Fire Bolts and for their exceptional performance they won 1st place at the Apollo Theatre in New York City. Michael’s first job was for a Boy Scout Chapter in Queens, New York earning a hefty salary of $2.30 for each band member. The group’s experience came when they played during intermissions for the Fire Bolts.
“The Mike Flythe Project†is both entertaining and educational as presented by renowned “Drummer Extraordinaire" & Grammy Nominated artist “Mike Flythe.†His many successes include the Platinum record “Funkin’ For Jamaica.†Mike Flythe has recorded and toured Internationally with various artists “Dizzy Gillespie, Alfonzo Blackwell, Brian McKnight, Kurtis Blow and Run DMC to name a few.†His latest movie appearance is “What Would Jesus Buyâ€.
Aside from being an acute descendant of the late great Edward Kennedy “Duke†Ellington, Mike Flythe has continued to be driven to ascertain the elegance and integrity that has been past down through his musical heritage. This history began with the Jazz Quartet called “Flythe Timeâ€, a story of two brothers, Michael and Alvin, who both shared the same dream and ambition. It is the story of talent nurtured in the home and developed in Jamaica, Queens, New York. Since 1976, “Flythe Time†has become a new sound born of old jazz and new insight.
“Flythe Time†represents the joining of dreams and ambitions of two brothers seeking success in Jazz, a style of music they love. Since its inception, they have striven to continue and develop their craft to create a unique style that the public will appreciate and want. Jazz is an American Art form, and Michael and Alvin in “Flythe Time†have perpetuated this form to its fullest.
Michael’s experience during the early 1970’s was gained from working with such professionals as Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Roy Haynes, Bruno Carr and Walter Perkins to name a few.
Michael continued to gain recognition for his talents and was asked to perform as a Drum Soloist on the Lou Rawls United Negro College Fund - “Parade of Stars†on New York’s WPIX Channel 11. He was also featured on Stanley Jordan’s Blue Note release “Cornucopiaâ€, which was nominated for a Grammy.
With intense perseverance and motivation, Michael has acquired the flare and style of a drummer that has captivated audiences of all walks of life. Michael Flythe has truly earned the title of “Drummer Extraordinaire.†Mike Flythe is also a Drum School Instructor and takes pride in teaching his special techniques to students in “The Drums Extraordinaire School of Drumming.†This program is designed to present to and interest Students in the history and music appreciation in Drumming.
