The biggest challenge when you’re an artiste, is to stand out and be noticeable to your target audience. On the other hand, it isn’t that hard when your style is unique. This is the story of the Da Face, so named because brackets are constantly placed on his style but are not equipped to contain him. This style of ‘no style’ has been influenced by rap, rapso, soca, dancehall and reggae and usually generates questions from listeners curious to know what genre it belongs to. It is this uniqueness that convinced the Da Face to pursue music in a serious way.
Da Face started singing in 2003 under the influence of artist such as Kanye West, Eminem, 3 Suns, Machel Montano and Bunji Garlin. Initially, writing and singing was relegated to a hobby but became serious after some positive feedback from friends. Once this decision was made, many hours were spent practicing on a computer mic in solitary trying to perfect the technique and become good enough to make an impact on the Trinidad music scene.
In 2007, Da Face joined local rap/reggae group Krucial Klan, a group that specializes in making soulful music with a lyrical edge. This experience was instrumental in cementing a musical path for Da Face and gave him the drive to continue as a solo artiste. The year 2007 would also be a defining year as Da Face released his first single entitled Forever. The song received favourable but modest airplay on certain radio stations and this inspired Da Face to continue recording. In 2008 Da Face has plans to release an album titled "Hitchhiker's Guide to UWI" and to enter Synergy Soca Star. Thus far two songs have been released: “Jennifer†and “Uwi Girlsâ€.
The album "Hitchhiker's Guide to Uwi" is unique in that it is a 'concept' album. On this album Da Face assumes the weather-beaten role of someone who successfully crossed the rugged path that is uwi and has documented an account of his travels to provide advice on how others can be successful. Devoting energy to such a nuanced project may seem like madness to some but Da Face in no ordinary artiste. This project is seen as a springboard to the next goal of becoming the best Trini artiste.
