Intervju med Fredrik i SkaWars
Gordon formed in the summer of 1995, originally as a three-piece with Fredrik van der Lee (bass/vocals), Jonas Stalheim (guitar/vocals) and Kalle Thorslund (drums).
Before the band got a chance to rehearse properly it was decided that van der Lee should switch to second guitar, and that bass duty be transferred to Jonas Slattung. The members all knew each other from different previous bands, as well as from working together at one of Gothenburg’s biggest and most credited record stores, Skivhugget.
Signing on really early to local label Roligan Records, a company founded by three Danes in seclusion in Gothenburg, made it possible for Gordon to release the four song EP The Baretta EP in the autumn of ’95. The group then began what was to become a more or less constant touring until early 1997.
Martin Hederos, a well known local session musician, was hired to handle the keyboard parts played by Stalheim in the studio, eventually settling as a full time member.
The follow-up full length debut Oh My God, It’s Full Of Stars was recorded while Gordon was still out touring. The single Mad Place got some heavy rotation at radio stations.
The summer of ’96 saw Gordon playing virtually every large festival in Sweden.
There seemed to be some momentum as the group gathered in early autumn of ’96 to work on their second album.
One track surfaced; the single Michael Caine, a version of a not too well known tune by Gordon’s long time heroes, Madness.
Unfortunately, Hederos was getting more and more busy with his other band, The Soundtrack Of Our Lives, and soon it became clear that he wasn’t going to be able to contribute fully to Gordon.
The recordings came to a halt.
Hederos was replaced by Calle Stinzing, also a seasoned local session keyboardist.
In order to get the New Boy in shape, some more live dates were scheduled.
Then, in early ’97, while Gordon was touring the north of Sweden, van der Lee’s father passed away.
Some months later, the group re-rallied and went on a European tour together with Dutch trad-2-tone-ska-outfit Mr Review. Although the concerts were a triumphant return to form, at the end of the tour both Thorslund and Stintzing announced their retirement from the group.
They both stayed on, however, until 5 tracks for the follow-up to Oh My God…, entitled Relaxed & Comfortable, was recorded.
