BIOGRAPHY
Fathers Day, Jun 21st, 1987, in San Diego, CA, Rhonda Jewel Langford gave her husband, Michael “Michael Gi” Langford his father’s day gift. Michael Gi’s second baby boy, Justin Christopher Langford, who kicked off the first day of summer. Rhonda fell in love with her newborn instantly. She called him many nicknames such as, Mommy’s Wubby, Jay Jay Bad, Birdy Bird, Jay, and Jaybird. For some reason Jaybird just stuck. Three years later Michael Gi and Rhonda split up, but stayed caring friends to each other and loving parents to their two sons, Jaybird and Michael Langford II.
Being raised in two households surrounded by music, Jaybird and Michael II always had a tune in their heads. While over their mother’s house they heard gospel, jazz, old school r&b, new school r&b, and hip-hop. While over their father’s house they heard the same genres, but with Michael Gi being a successful recording artist himself, he would teach his children about the art of music. Michael II, wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps, embraced the love for r&b. Michael Gi noticed Michael II’s talent and started putting him in local talent shows and showcases. Jaybird, looking up to his big brother, would perform with him. Together Michael II and Jaybird became a young dynamic duo.
Later on, Jaybird embraced the love for hip-hop. He would run around his mother’s house with a black bandanna tied around his head, listening and reciting the lyrics to the music of his favorite rap artist, the late great Tupac Shakur. Rhonda, finding it amusing, called Jaybird an in-house thug. At the age of 12 he started teaching himself how to “freestyle”, which is rapping a verse live from your first thought. Michael Gi, also recognizing his baby boy’s talent, laid down the blueprint of the way a song is written for Jaybird and inspired him to actually write down his lyrics to form songs.
At age 14, Jaybird started attending San Marcos High School. There he met a kid named Patrick who made beats and gave Jaybird his very first beat. Having a hard time using the method of writing Michael Gi taught him, Jaybird went into Michael Gi’s home studio (held in Michael Gi’s kitchen), imported his first beat into Pro Tools and freestyled his first song. After he was done recording, Jaybird listened to the track he made and wrote all of the lyrics down. He was so proud of his accomplishment, Jaybird immediately told Michael Gi to mix his first song. With the little knowledge Michael Gi had of mixing, Michael Gi mixed Jaybird’s first song to the best of his ability. Once the song was done, Jaybird titled it “Put Ya Hands Up” and took it back to school for all his friends to listen. He received great feedback from his peers. From that point on, Jaybird saw nothing but the dream to be a top hip-hop recording artist.
Unfortunately, Jaybird was not focusing on his schoolwork due to the distraction of music, girls, and troubles he would encounter. So his mother Rhonda thought it would be best to send him to live with Michael Gi and his new wife Darlene Langford, aka “D”, to learn some discipline and spend his senior year at Rancho Bernardo High School. Michael Gi worked hard with Jaybird and taught him how to balance music and school. Learning how to do so, Jaybird’s grades soon came up. Although he started working hard on his schoolwork, his love for music never died and Michael Gi saw that. Inspired by Jaybird’s ambition towards music, Michael Gi started his own record label and called it Family Affair Entertainment (F.A.E.).
By the time the label was born, Michael Gi’s know-how to work in a studio became superb. Michael II evolved into a very talented music producer and vocalist, singing r&b and experimenting in other genres. He became so talented that he started working with the likes of multi Grammy Award winner, Kenny O’Brien, forming a name in the entertainment industry known as Mr. Mike. Recognizing the talent that God blessed him with, Mr. Mike saw the calling to be his baby brother’s main producer. The dynamic duo became stronger and so did Jaybird’s songs.
With the help of the label and networking, Jaybird’s music and following has grown tremendously. He’s appeared with the likes of Jayo Felony (Jaybird’s uncle), Yung Berg, Wiz Khalifa, comedian George Lopez, The Los Angeles Lakers and The Laker Girls, Juice (from the “Stomp The Yard” dvd), Naima (from Americas Next Top Model), and many more. His music has been heard on many local, international, and online radio stations. What’s next for Jaybird? He says, “The number 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart”… and with Jaybird’s focus, ambition, determination, talent, and faith in God, he is sure to get there.
This biography was written for the one with a dream. Family Affair Entertainment hopes that you follow yours by any means necessary. God bless.
