What is ROCK AM RING festival all about?
Rock am Ring (Rock at Ring) is a rock music festival held annually in Germany at the Nürburgring racetrack. It is the largest music festival in Germany and one of the largest in Europe.
Rock am Ring was originally planned as a one-time festival celebrating the inauguration of a newer, shorter version of the track in 1985, but due to its commercial success (with 75,000 audience members), it was decided to make the concert an annual event. However, after a dip in attendance for the 1988 event, the festival was put on hiatus for two years.
In 1991, the festival returned with a new concept: as well as featuring well-known artists, event organizers present lesser known up-and-coming bands to the public. Some of the little-known artists who got their start at Rock am Ring and have gone on to achieve commercial success include INXS and Alanis Morissette.
Rock am Ring has a twin festival named Rock im Park, which features the same artists and is held in Nuremberg at the same time as Rock am Ring. Its first incarnation took place in Vienna in 1993, and the event has been moved three times since. In 1994 it moved to Munich, where it was held at the Riem-Airport and hence was named "Rock in Riem". A year later, the festival was moved to the Olympic Park and thus took on the name "Rock im Park", but it was not until 1997 that it found its current home of Nuremberg. But this current home now has to change after 10 years of cooperation. The "Marek Lieberberg Konzertagentur", organisator of the twin-festival, has to search a new location. The reason is that in 2007 there will be a soccer-match at the "Frankenstadion" in Nuremberg which is located next to the festival field. And the infrastructure is not able to handle two big events at the same time. The organisators now have to search a new location in Southern Germany, not only as a one-time replacement but also for the future of this festival.
