The
Rock and Roll Social is based on a simple premise: great things happen when musicians unite.
The second Tuesday night of every month the
Model Cafe plays host to this relaxed, informal industry event called the Rock~n~Roll Social. Since its November 2003 inception, the Social has drawn Boston area artists from every genre, from spoken word to metal, punk, pop, roots, blues and everything in between. And because the music industry relies on support talent to bridge the gap between the stage and the audience, the Social also draws writers, DJs, booking agents, publicists, sound engineers, website designers and photographers.
No bands play during the Social, there's no cover charge and no pressure on anyone to bring anything other than their desire to be part of a local music scene that has launched acts like The Pixies, Patty Griffin, The Cars, Morphine, Extreme, Til Tuesday, Letters to Cleo and Powerman 5000.
Those who have something to promote usually bring CDs, postcards, flyers or tickets to give away. Those who looking for new acts to book, new subjects to write about or new songs to play on local radio usually bring business cards and leave with a stack of new CDs to check out.
When all of the denizens of the Boston music community come together, ideas are sparked, doors open and excitement is generated. The Social has been responsible for bands finding new members, DJs unearthing their new hot pick-of-the-week, booking agents discovering the right opening act, photographers encountering their next client, and bands meeting their dream sound engineer. The Social provides the means to lift the veil of anonymity fostered by email. Through direct personal interaction, the Social puts faces to names allowing for contacts to be made and new friends to be found. In what may be the harshest industry in the world, the only thing that counts more than talent is friends and contacts.
