March 19, 2005On the second anniversary of his death, friends of Mshindi Ford held a candlelight vigil to honor the well-liked beach resident and draw attention to his unsolved killing.Yesterday's vigil before sunset was along the South Mission Beach boardwalk, just yards from the converted garage on Dover Court where Ford, 35, lived and was fatally shot. The gunman, apparently someone Ford knew, opened fire during a robbery March 18, 2003.Advertisement "We are looking to the people of San Diego for some answers," said Melissa Berner, a family friend from Santa Monica who organized the memorial. "Somebody has to know why Mshindi was killed and who killed him."Berner said Ford's family and friends are frustrated that police haven't arrested anyone. Two other people were in Ford's home at the time and saw the shooting."It's a very sad day for me," said Ford's mother, Evelyn, who lives in Pittsburgh and could not attend the vigil. "It's been two years and still no arrest. I miss my son very much. I miss his smile, his big heart and his great disposition.A couple of dozen people attended the remembrance along the boardwalk.Two waist-high wooden crosses, each with a picture of Ford, stood in the sand, and one person brought a tray of organic oranges for people to eat. Ford used to give oranges to people he met and would talk to them about their being healthy, said Craig Beck, who helped organize the gathering."Mshindi knew more people than probably anybody else," Beck said.Alain Bapic, Ford's former roommate, drove from the Los Angeles area because, he said, Ford was his best friend and a father figure."I came here to be close to him and to say a prayer and to feel him," Bapic said."Legends never die. He was a legend to me."San Diego police Lt. Kevin Rooney said the case continues to be a high priority."We have, in fact, interviewed some people in the past two months who gave us information," he said without elaborating. "This murder remains under very active investigation by one of our homicide teams; it has not gone into the cold case files."Rooney also praised the community's effort to keep the case open, which could bring more leads.Police have a composite sketch of the killer based on witness descriptions. They also have a description of the getaway car: a reddish-brown 1990s Chevrolet Caprice. They believe the gunman is no longer in the area.The shooting shocked the close-knit South Mission Beach community. When people learned Ford was the victim, they cried as they gathered in an alley near Mission Boulevard."Mshindi didn't have any enemies; he was an inspiration to all of us," said Shirley Wright, who still lives nearby. "I remember he had a great love of life. He ate organic food, kept in great shape and shunned drugs or alcohol."Others said Ford, who owned a charter transportation company, was always ready for a game of pickup football on the beach.He also had a special interest in at-risk youths."He often would go into the inner city with one of his charter buses and bring some of them with their parents to the beach for an outing," his mother said. "His desire someday was to run a ranch or facility for at-risk youths."There is speculation Ford was killed over a business deal.Police said a man came to Ford's residence about 2 p.m. the day of the shooting and demanded money and documents. Ford resisted and the man removed two silver handguns from a backpack and began shooting. Ford died an hour later at a hospital.The two witnesses told police that before the shooting, Ford introduced them to the man, calling him K.C. or Casey.====================================================== ========== The True Meaning of Love A girl and a guy were speeding over 100mph on a motorcycle. The next day in the newspaper, a motorcycle crashed into a building due to brake failure. Two people were in the crash, but only one survived. The truth was that halfway down the road the guy realized that the breaks weren't working, but he didn't want the girl to know. Instead, he had her hug him and tell him she loves him one last time. Then he had her put his helmet on so that she would live, even if it meant that he would die.
