Influences
I would like my first influence to always be God but family as well as friends have been influences in my life as well.
When I was 12 years old, the floor tom, tom chose me, it was the last instrument left during my first day of band. The other children didn't want to play the floor tom but I did. It was my instrument by design. I walked almost 1 mile home with my floor tom in it's black case, I was excited, enthused and proud, but when I reached home, my mother saw the instrument I had chosen and said, "little girls don't play drums," and told me to take it back to school the very next day. The walk back to school that morning was the longest, saddest walk I ever took, I wanted so much to play but I wasn't going to disobey my mother, who was and still is a strong black woman who meant what she said and said what she meant. We didn't play with her. My mother at that time was rearing 5 children on her own while my father worked away from NC, doing construction so we could have a decent life in Winston Salem.
Feeling the sadness gripping me every step of the way, that was my last time ever in a band room. My dreams were destroyed that day but a power greater than myself new that within my heart were the sounds of drum beats and even though it was years later when I picked up a pair of drum sticks again, I always knew it was my destiny. A dream that dies a quick death as a direct result of the actions of others can be and shall be reborn.
I purchased my first kit, a Lugwig kit made from birch wood, stained marine green, and it was a pro kit as well even though I didn't know how to play. It was still a few years before I started teaching myself and I'm still teaching myself. I'm learning everyday and one day I'm going to be the drummer I should have been if I had been allowed to play when I was 12 years old.

God's way, man's interpretation?

Will man stop trying to be God? It's one thing to believe in God's word but another to add to or take away from God's word. When one adds their own flavor to God's word it becomes destorted, confusing...
