About Me

Anika a.k.a Anika Hazel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Jamaican parents, Anika was exposed to reggae and soul music from a young age. With large influences such as Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, and various reggae artists, including Bob Marley, Anika grew up loving music. Approaching high school, Anika began to mature out of her shyness, with help from sports clubs such as Peel Selects (volleyball) and BGSA (softball), which helped Anika express herself without words and eventually with words. Anika realized her musical talents in grade 5, when a project required her to perform a duet with a classmate. However, due to her excessive shyness, she did not begin sharing this talent willingly until grade 8, although, she had wrote her first song at the tender age of 12, entitled “Maybe See You Tomorrow”. As Anika progressed through grade 8 and 9 she began performing in school events and began mastering her talent of performing and writing music. She performed more often throughout her high school years in attempts to manage and conquer her stage fright. In grade 11 she began seeking help to achieve her dream of entering the music industry, and therefore began writing and recording her work. She also began creating her own instrumentals and beats, as heard in songs such as “Fall”, “One More Time”, and more. Knowing the unpredictability of entering the music industry, Anika made sure she graduated from high school with honors. She then began attending York University majoring in Criminology and minoring in Sociology, to ensure an alternative option. However, singing on stage and performing for other people was always number one in her dreams. Currently, Anika continues to work heavily on her music and attempts to be discovered while working to complete her honors program at York University. Anika is due to graduate with her honors Bachelor of Arts in Criminology in 2009, and plans to attack the music industry at full force after graduation. She also considers applying for law school, as a second option. Anika’s music has been described as refreshing and fresh, new, different, a style of her own, relatable, flexible, and versatile. Her musical style varies and has qualities from reggae/dancehall, soul, R&B, hip hop, jazz, country, classical music, blues, and many others. She enjoys many, many forms of music and incorporates those styles into her music to create a her own unique sound, and to express her love of these various genres into her sound. She enjoys music by, has been inspired by artists such as; Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Tina Turner, Beyonce, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, Garnett Silk, Beres Hammond, Aaliyah, Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, Michael Bolton, Mary J. Blige, Kirk Franklin, Usher, R. Kelly, and many, many more. Anika is currently recording, keep an ear out for her.Anika Mattrasingh Toronto - singer, song writer, beat producer, music lover!!!
