About Me

I believe that the measure of a person is in what they have done and what they will do, not only in their accomplishments, but also how they handle adversity, failure, and defeat. That said, who I am is about what I do. I work for a family business and we custom fabricate heavy machinery, mostly for the coal mining industry. Some of the more interesting projects have been converting military Hummers for underground mine duty in the state of West Virginia. The requirements for diesel powered equipment in these mines require the use of technologies in exhaust aftertreatment that are ahead of what manufacturers are putting in on highway trucks right now. I have worked on a joint research project with NIOSH dealing with exhaust aftertreatment devices and we should be publishing some SAE papers this year about it.The job that keeps me moving though is our radio remote controlled track loader. We call it a MICROTRAXX, it is used to go into confined spaces and hazardous areas where manned equipment will not fit or it is too dangerous for the operator. Mostly we use it to clean sedimentation out from drainage culverts and under low clearance bridges. Some other places I have been with it include cleaning debris off of a higwall bench in a destabilized area, and a steel mill to clean slag out from under the furnaces. I will be posting blogs about it as I travel and work in different areas of the country.Seeing the country is truly awesome, driving across it is very tiresome...
