About Me
Vavoura Band was formed by bassist and vocalist Johnny Vavouras and guitarist Yiannis Drolapas in September of 1976 and after 4 months of frantic rehearsals and numerous auditions of candidate drummers, appered for the first time on January 28,1977 at the Piper club in Athens,Greece, and the rest is history… The band quickly aquired a strong following as concerts became more frequent and larger in attendance, usually held in movie theaters on Sunday mornings and in various clubs, bars and discotheques.By the end of 1977 the band had successfully made its way into the top clubs in the Athens area, highlighting at the Kyttaro club supporting Greece’s then top rock band Socrates and later in 1978 they headlined at the same club.Yiannis Drolapas’ explosive lead guitar riffs and Johnny Vavouras’aggressive bass lines and vocals, along with his strong personality gave their audience something to remember after each concert, especially when they started smashing their
equipment, the Who style at the end of their shows!!! The band was going so strong that on the 26th of December of 1979 the held a day after Christmas concert at the Sporting basketball arena, and had a full house, incredible for o two year old band that didn’t even have a album or a single released at the time!!!
Musically influenced by Jimi Hendrix,Black Sabbath,Led Zeppelin,Hakwind,Iron Butterfly,Pink floyd,Amon Duul,Jethro Tull,Rory Gallagher[who
they met in September of 1981 as Rory did two shows in Greece and Johnny was the technical production manager for the show] Johnny Winter,Aphrodites’ Child[a sensational Greek band formed in the sixties by world famous musicians Vangelis Papathanassiou, keyboardist and composer of famous soundtracs such as Charriot of the fire, vocalist and bass player Demis Roussos, and drummer Loucas Sideras, with whom Yiannis Drolapas formed a band in the late eighties called Diesel] they quickly aquired a unique heavy trio sound, accented by their fondness of ehnic music from Greece
to the East and all the way to India and also to Byzantine music as well.
Their passion for Ethic music earned them their ticket into the movies,as Dimitris Arvanitis,a promising upcoming film director offered Vavoura Band the chance in the summer of 1980 to compose the soundtrack for his documentary film titled Santorini, shot in august of that year at this world famous volcanic island,a film that won two awards at the Thessaloniki film festival a month later and opened new horizons for the band’s future in composing soundtracks[see CD –ETHNIC-Soundtracks for films]
