DOLAMITE
‘A new voice for black music’Dolamite aka ‘The seeker’ is an exciting artist and producer with a message in his music.He grew up on the Stonebridge and Harlesden estate, notorious for gun and drug crimes during the 90’s. Determined to avoid getting drawn into this negative environment and through his love of music and a desire to achieve something productive with it, he chose another way.Born of Jamaica parentage, he was greatly influenced by the sounds and artists coming out of his mother country, and he embraced the whole culture.
From an early age he and his cousin Chuckie Starr were respected performers in the community, M’cing together on sound systems and showcasing their talent at many cool and sometimes not so cool venues, whilst polishing their vocal and lyrical skills.
Dolamite subsequently founded Suncycle ,the premier dancehall group in Britain ,who became one of the hottest underground acts in the country, working with the likes of Pop band Texas, Asher d, Elephant man, Capleton, Sizzla, Spragga Benz , busy signal and various other Jamaican dancehall producers.
Having firmly established them as a successful live and recording act, he felt a calling from his Jamaican roots to represent the music that influenced him in a new and contemporary way and embarked on a solo career.The ‘Seeker’in him had a hunger to discover more wisdom and overstanding of the ‘self’ and Dolamite felt it was now time to express this knowledge through his songs.
He felt compelled to tell his own stories and relay his own worldview combining the conscious element of Reggae with other more eclectic styles.The opportunity to musically interpret these ideas was made possible by the formation of Radioplay, a production company formed with ‘Dutty Jon, a musician and writer from another background, but with a versatile musical appreciation.
Often they would get together at Dolamite’s studio and jam throughout the day, writing in an organic way and combining Dutty’s sweet guitar riffs with Dolamite’s softer toned melodies.Inspiration emerged from a range of influences, especially Bob Marley and garnet silk in terms of the messages of peace and waking up the people.Through the seeking of what he calls the ‘hidden knowledge’ continued to grow in consciousness and spirituality and this began to materialise more in his songs as conveyed in ‘Found Myself’
But Dolamite’s own inimitable lyrical and rhythmic vocal style is the spearhead of all the music.This fusion is stirring and provocative and the subject matter related more to the political thinking soul of the seventies rather than the usual macho machine gun posturing of recent urban music, although there are definitely songs of love-‘Play With Your Mind’ hello and ‘Loving Somebody’ and other tender tunes such as ‘Workaholic,’ a tribute to his mother..
Dolamite feels there is a message in his music and hopes he can entertain and move people, but at the same time, make them aware of his own story on knowledge, wisdom and overstanding.
