"DADDY DOES WHITE TRASH!" The Film
Malibu, California, 23 January 2009.CinédiscStudios' concert-film of American Bluessinger Daddy Hemingway & His BlackRiders Orchestra, "DADDY DOES WHITE TRASH", shot in Berlin, German over the course of three sets (2-1/2 hours), went into post-production in LA. A 90 minute documentary film, shot with Arri Cameras' super 16mm cameras and Arri's new HD definition cameras, utilizing Cinemascope lenses, "Daddy Does White Trash" was filmed in East Berlin's rock an' roll restaurant & concert-stage emporium, White Trash Fast Food. The look of the film is "Polanski Chinatown" film noir, and tells its story through the multi-media camera mix of the band's night onstage at White Trash.
Selected still frames from "DDWT" will be available online from 1st June 2009 at http://cinediscstudios.org Austrian director of photography, Fritz Sammer, employed 8 cameras to capture more than 10 hours of concert footage, and Rock veteran Thomas Stiehler's (recording engineer for Marillion, Killing Joke, Psychedelic Furs, etc) Stokinger Productions recorded the 2-1/2 hours of Hemingway's "Black-Zeppelin-Chicago-Electric" style of Blues music, digital multi-track (24 trks).
BlackRiders' repertoire includes "One 4 Da Lonely", Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone", the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses", Bob Marley & The Wailers' "Pimpers Paradise", plus Hemingway's own "No Money Today", "Boogie All Night", "Wanna Be Yo' Doctor", and "Sonny Boy The Rooster".
In London's Carnaby Street era (1967-68), Robin (Daddy) Hemingway was a sought-after record producer, signed to produce mostly Black acts for RCA Records (the white Scottish band Riff-Raff, an exception), EMI Records (Tony Wilson, Herbie Goins & Nighttimers), and the Beatles' Apple Music (Eddie "Ton-Ton" Thornton, Speedy Acquaye). Punk-Rocker Darryl Read (for Decca Records) was the other White exception in Daddy's Black English stable of acts. Managed in the UK & Europe by Jimi Hendrix' manager Michael Jeffries, Hemingway flew to Paris, France at the begining of the May 1968 riots to produce singer-pianist Joe Turner, and through a tip from Jimi Hendrix found legendary guitarist T-Bone Walker. This left-bank hotel meeting resulted in Robin Hemingway producing T- Bone Walker's classic lp "Good Feelin'" in Paris on a shoestring budget. Choosing Polydor-France for distribution, the album won Grammy-Awards (1970), "Best Ethnic Or Traditional Recording", for Walker & Hemingway. Moving from Paris to Berlin, Hemingway's own bands played their hard electric Blues from chic restaurants to squat houses to the Deutsches Oper Berlin (June & November '00 concerts).
For "Daddy Does White Trash", Cinematographer Sammer assembled a stellar camera-crew of local Berlin filmmakers, including Till Juon, Uwe Mann and the cartoonist Alberto. Film Editor David Rawlins (Saturday Night Fever, China Syndrome, Urban Cowboy) is onboard as Supervising Film Editor. Hemingway's CinediscStudios, and Sammer's Sammer Film Production, are co-producing with Hemingway & Sammer listed as co-directors. The final film and DVD will be ready by the end of June 2010 to qualify for the Academy Awards in Los Angeles 2011. No film distribution has been set, although there are plans to release a single "One 4 Da Lonely" on CineDisc Records before October 2009.
