My mother...CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Authorities have released the name of a 23-year-old man fatally shot by a Carlsbad police officer after allegedly threatening him with a screwdriver.Images: Police Shoot Man On FreewayTrevell Williams of Temecula died Tuesday of a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to a medical examiner's investigator.The officer, a sergeant and 10-year veteran, was put on paid administrative leave on Wednesday, and an investigation into the shooting is under way, Carlsbad police spokeswoman Lynn Diamond said.The officer's name has not been released.Police responded to a vehicle-vandalism call at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 4000 block of Adams Street when the suspect threw a rock at a mail truck and shattered a window, Diamond said.The suspect fled but was spotted by the officer at 1:34 p.m. walking northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, Diamond said.The officer approached the suspect, who threatened the officer with a screwdriver, Diamond said. When the officer tried to back away, the suspect continued to walk toward the officer, prompting the officer to open fire, Diamond said.Williams was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where he died during surgery.
