The Long & Boring Story of The Spatulas Inception...
Known for their unpredictable songs and even more unpredictable stage performances, The Spatulas raise the bar on comedy music. They've performed with the likes of large inflatable robots, dancing dogs, and even the not-so-famous Fluffy Furry Funny-Looking Friends.
1998 - Lead vocalist, Grubbs, writes 'Molly The Toothbrush' for elementary school kids and uses it to get credit for a 'Storytelling in the Community' class @ UNC-Wilmington. 'Holy Cow' was written this same year on an InterVarsity beach retreat with the help of good friend, Jeremiah. Everything but the chorus was rewritten the day before it was recorded in the studio.
Christmas 2000 , Grubbs & Slick perform 'The Unsung Reindeer Song' at the TNT Christmas Songwriting Contest and tie for first place. Kenny M. helped write it with them as they were driving to the event.
2001 - Grubbs and his friends begin recording a 11.5 song full-length "demo" (while they were becoming a rag-tag quasi-band). The cd 'The Other Things In Life' was released on April Fool's Day of the same year. That year, among other things, they opened for Havalina Rail Company (R.I.P.- one of the coolest, most unique bands ever) at Tremont Music Hall.
On January 1st 2002 , the band officially became known as 'The Spatulas'. Randinimo had come up with the name and after a democratic vote from their online fans it became official. In other news, their song, 'Holy Cow' was rerecorded to become an animated cartoon. Also, The Spatulas were invited to perform at Lowe's Motor Speedway's Dirt Track with the popular Christian band, Audio Adrenaline and several other local bands.
Between 2003 and 2007 , The Spatulas remained relatively silent. Grubbs, on occasion, would appear on several local cable shows, like: The John Schilling Show, Nelson At Nite, and Kool Kat Ken's. But in general, they have been too busy getting married, having real jobs, making babies, or waxing back hairs to play out much.
The goal for 2008 is for The Spatulas to strike back in nearly full force by recording several new tracks (like ' The Pirate Song '). When they return it will be unlike anything the world has ever seen. New songs, new smells, and even larger objects catapulting into the crowd.
THE RECIPE: The Spatulas are out to prove that being a Christian can be amusing and sometimes even funny. Their goal is to mix music, humor, robots in a way that expresses their passion for God. In the process, they hope it challenges and entertains today's young hoodlums.

WATCH 'The Pirate Song'
Live at Lakewood Church in Irmo, SC
Slick played drums for Bryan instead of the bongo-congo thingys and Randinimo played bass instead of his wicked-cool electric guitar. We were short a few band members, but it was still a great show, a great group of kids, and a real fun time! This is a rough version of our 'Pirate Song' recorded live and filmed by Aaron Jolly.
