The Smokey Joe Show Smokey Joe Show Impresses at Charlotte Music Awards Country Showcase The Smokey Joe Show won the Charlotte Music Awards’ Country Showcase. The event, which also included the fine talents of David Cody, Greg Griffin and David Lambert and the Carolina Rails, was held on Nov. 29 at Puckett’s Farm Equipment in the Derita community of Charlotte.
Hailing from Burnsville, N.C., the Smokey Joe Show describes their music as “homegrown original music.” It might be best described as a little blues, a little country, a little bluegrass and a whole lot of mountain. The band is fronted by “Smokey Joe” Peoples and 15-year-old Chelsea Goodman. Tom Rogers adds some outstanding contributions on harmonicas. The audience seemed to particularly enjoy the song “Ooh Baby.” That song and others performed at the show are on the band’s new CD, Little Buildings.
The Charlotte Music Awards partnered with Kat Love of KMAC Music Promotions to put on the Country Showcase. Roger Cullis, a local TV producer and music producer, emceed the event. The judges for the showcase were Julia Dixon, Kelly Gray, Fran MacLeran and Ricky Traywick. Brandon Rosenthal served as the stage manager.
The Charlotte Music Awards promotes all aspects of music in Charlotte and the Carolinas. The showcases are one of the group’s activities for enhancing the profile of the music scene in the Carolinas. They are hosted at different venues across a variety of genres, leading up to an annual Awards Ceremony, the first of which was held in September at Ovens Auditorium.
“Little Buildings”
The long awaited album, “Little Buildings”, recorded by a very original Americana band, The Smokey Joe Show, is enjoying its current national release. The album includes all “homemade” lyrics penned by Smokey Joe Peoples and expressed musically by The Smokey Joe Show.
“These folks offer a rare combination of intelligence, humor, and real emotion in their performances. The musically expressive writing of Joe Peoples is superbly executed by this tight group of musicians.” - Patrick Crawford – Station Manager WUWF 88.1– Radio Live, June 2006 University of West Florida, Pensacola, FL
“This group of people is one of the most interesting groups of people I have met in a long time.”- Dave Carter – DJ for WETS 89.5 Studio One – University of East Tennessee, Johnson City, TN
“Smokey Joe" Peoples (Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar) has been writing and singing songs for over thirty years. Smokey Joe's career as a singer-songwriter began in 1983 as the primary creative force behind the Wisteria Sting Band, which was the house band for Florida Public Radio's WUWF Radio Live program "On the Road" for over four years. Those who have seen him perform delight in his folksy, melodic voice and harmonic guitar playing. The content of his songs often make an audience laugh, cry and feel many emotions in between.
Chelsea Lorraine Goodman (Lead Vocals, Egg) has been blowing away audiences with her mature singing talent at the age of only fifteen. She is a force to be reckoned with and a favorite of anyone who hears her perform. She is a”straight A” sophomore with the local version of “American Idol” title under her belt.
Darryl Goodman (Bass) Chelsea’s Father, broke out of his “just for fun” six-string guitar playing to push Chelsea into a singing career. It is a special thrill for him to be performing with his daughter.
Tom Rogers (Harmonica, Vocals) started his career in 1969 working with a main stream blues band Fat Sal. In 1976, he joined Jeree Records, recording for country and blues artists. At that time he recorded a song for Maureen McGovern. He then joined a 7 piece band called Heavy Country doing country and blues. They were picked up by Warner Brother’s recording artist Big Al Downing and toured with him until 1987, playing The Grand Old Opry and a number of Hee Haw episodes. Along the way he has jammed and/or shared the stage with, Little Feat, Danny Gaton, Roy Buchanan, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Doc and Merle Watson, Cleve Francis, LAW, Red Steagal, Johnny Williams, Vassar Clements, Jackson Crossing, Sheb Wooley, The Poindexters, Merle Kilgore and Bobby Thompson.
George Brasington (Drums) is a jack-of-all-trades who enjoys gardening and playing drums. Along with his family, George lives in Celo, NC in a completely off-grid, earthen house he has built himself.
