[♥]r.i.p. midnight i will never forget u[♥] When police found the car they believe Reginald Buchannan was driving before he died, they saw what looked like blood on the driver's seat. They also found a spent gold-colored shell casing resting on a baby seat in the back. Now they believe they've found Buchannan's killers.Three men were charged Monday in the April 16 homicide that left Buchannan lying in the road in Battle Creek Regional Park.In what may have been a marijuana deal gone sour, Buchannan, 25, was shot through the head as he was driving with Calvin Randolph Short, 31, and David Dwayne Porter, 29, of St. Paul, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday in Ramsey County District Court.According to the complaint by prosecuting attorney Robert Plesha, and search warrants in the case:A passerby called police after seeing a man's body in the street at Battle Creek Road near Lower Afton Road about 8:30 a.m. April 16. Police found no suspects and no vehicle.Porter and Short were identified later through their cell phone numbers, after police looked into numbers connected with the victim's phone.Initially, Porter denied having anything to do with Buchannan's slaying. After repeated questioning by police, however, Porter said that he arranged to buy some pot from Buchannan and that Buchannan drove to meet him and Short at Short's apartment the morning of the slaying.Porter said he was in the front seat beside Buchannan, and Short was in the back. Porter heard a shot and saw Short lean over from the back and put the car in park, he told police. Holding a gun in his hand, Short then got out and removed Buchannan from the driver's seat, Porter told police.
Short denied being the shooter and would not say whether he was in the car when Buchannan was killed. Both Porter and Short were charged with second-degree murder.A third man, Eugene Majied Johnson, 34, was charged with being an accomplice to the murder.According to the complaint, he met Porter and Short at the Sun-Ray Shopping Center after the shooting. Porter and Johnson then drove Buchannan's car to an alley in Minneapolis and ditched it there.Johnson denied meeting anyone at the shopping center and denied getting rid of the car.Assistant Ramsey County Medical Examiner Victor Froloff, who did an autopsy on Buchannan, reported that Buchannan was shot in the head, the bullet going from back to front. The victim had a 2003 conviction for possession of crack cocaine.Porter was in custody Monday at the Ramsey County Jail. Short and Johnson were arrested in the Chicago area Friday.
