About Me

It has been said amongst my friends that I keep "vampire hours". Your comments have been duly noted. In actuality I'm crepuscular. And before I hear any more whining about my profile pic, allow me to add that it will have to suffice for now, so get over it. :)

My Interests

Music, literature, geography, photography (though I still use slide film), trying to play the yang ch'in, warm weather, fall colors, Japanese cars, NORAC, women, my cats (Nicky, Joey, Kate, and Scott), linguistics and English usage, Latin usage, seeking audio perfection through the occasional use of vacuum tubes, beer, ferroequinology, all cats in general, making prodigious use of parentheses and commas, and probably some other stuff too. Don't ask me about sports, however. You could put all I know about sports on the head of a pin and still have room to spare. All I can tell you is that the size of the ball relates to the class of the sport in question...the larger the ball, the lower the class. And although I admit big cities have considerably more to offer in terms of culture, there is absolutely nothing more beautiful than the sky on a clear, starry night away from the ambient light of civilization. It's worth it.

Movies:

Too many. Hmm...I just watched "The Science Of Sleep". More on that later. But off the top of my head: Baraka, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Station Agent, Gladiator, Noises Off, the Philip Glass trio, The Jerk (old school, but funny). So many more to add when I get a moment.

Television:

I don't have a television. Haven't really watched any since early 1991. Every time I've had a TV I give it away just to keep my sanity. Most TV programming is annoying, dumbed-down, non-stimulating, and simplistic. Or I could just say it sucks. However, since you asked (or at least read this far), I have enjoyed Aqua Teen Hunger Force, MTV's Boiling Points, The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (such disillusionment), SCTV, Mythbusters, some science fiction, Monty Python. Everybody says I'd like "Rome".

Books:

I read everything I can. Always have. Fiction, science fiction, history, documentaries. Kierkegaard to Stephen King, C.S. Lewis, Baudelaire, William Blake, Edgar Allan Poe. And after fifteen years, I still can't figure out what "Goedel-Escher-Bach" was proving. Yes, I have some Nicholas Sparks books as well, and they usually make me sad. Probably because I realize life isn't like his books.

Heroes:

Anyone who DOESN'T do the following:(1) Measure distance in minutes. Distance should be measured in inches, feet, yards, miles, and in non-US countries in variations of the metre. This is a common problem in the midwest USA.(2) Use buzzwords, catch phrases, and other plebian colloquialisms such as, but not limited to, "enhance your experience", "good to go", and "it's all good". And if I hear you utter the phrase "git 'er done", I will *never* speak to you again. Consider yourself forewarned.(3) Say "issue" when you mean "problem"; we can live without the verbosity. ;) Global warming or nuclear warfare is an issue...where to place a chair is not.
Lastly, I'd like to add that in a perfect world, I would have met the fictitious Emily the Strange when I was 15 and we'd have been happy ever after. :)
