I'm a DJ because I love music!"—DJ SkipDJ skip's love for the arts is something that has been deep-rooted within the Trinidad native, who immigrated to Harlem, New York at the age of ten 10 years old (in the early '80s). His talent for music became noticeable, as a child, when DJ skip (Born Inskip Dasent) began playing the drums and steelpan (a percussion instrument originated in Trinidad that has now evolved globally).Shortly after his arrival in Harlem (or Uptown), one of his most memorable moments of the new Hip-Hop culture that DJ Skip was introduced to was seeing the legendary DJ Grandmaster Flash in action. "My parent's had taken me up to The Bronx to a party at the park," he recalls. "I was in awe when I saw [Grandmaster Flash] doing his thing with a passion—spinning his body around while scratching and mixing—it was amazing!"These days when Skip is behind the turntables, he says he feels that same excitement he did back then."I'm a DJ because I love music," he stated in a sincere tone after mentioning the days when he would scratch Nice and Smooth, Lionel Richie, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder and other vinyl on his mother's old record player. "It doesn't matter if I'm rocking a crowd of 10 or 10 thousand it's just a rush for me to know that I'm making people move on their feet."Knowing the importance of catering to different crowds is also an important factor. "I like to know my crowd and I never want to tell someone that I don't have what they request," he says. "Old school, new school, West Indian, Hip-Hop, R&B, Motown, you name the genre it I spin it!" DJ Skip also takes pride in his ability to manipulate an artist track to perfection to create the perfect blend. And although his name is Skip "Don't be fooled," he warns. "My needle never skips!"
