The Half Crown Pub

About Me

Keep in mind that this page is in the works! If you have info as to the history of The 1/2 Crown Pub, please contact the admin via MySpace email. We want your band info, pictures, and posters!
The 1/2 Crown Pub was a musical heaven in East Rockaway, NY - right next to the Davis Boatyard. On the other side the murky waters of Mill River floated by, adding a "we're going to fall into the creek!" feeling. You could really feel it in the back room (the band "dressing room") because it had a floor tilted as though it was going to slip right off the dock. Outside it looked like a dilapidated house. The roof sagged, the paint was dingy, and the walls actually crumbled. Inside it was grungy, cruddy and dim, covered with years of graffiti and musical memories. It may have smelled of beer and piss and smoke, but this place housed the very soul of over 100 musicians for at least 20 years. The decade of garage bands raged, the drinking age was still 18, and teenyboppers from every high school and college on Long Island flocked to the venues at The 1/2 Crown Pub. We're not entirely sure just how many groups were actually spawned as a result of this sagging lounge, but we intend to list every one as the groups check in and we talk to people who were involved. The intent of this website is to promote the music, the bands, and the memories that we all shared. Send us your digitized music, your band info and pictures, and let us display your proud memories! Please join us!

(If your band/performance is not listed here and you played/performed at The Half Crown Pub, email me! I got some of my info from an old copy of The Island Ear, from memory, from friends, and from pictures.)

Influences: Take a sample of the music advertised in the copy of The Island Ear that I'm using to get some of my info from:

Dexy's Midnight Runners is the highlighted band
Duran Duran, Culture Club, Joe Jackson, U2, Michael Jackson, The Stray Cats, Men Without Hats, Thomas Dolby and The Thompson Twins were in the top 20 on MTV and WLIR.
This was the era of The MTV generation! MTV was barely two or three years old. Video was the rage, 8 track reel-to-reels were still in use, and nothing was digitized. Computers had barely made the scene.
Most groups opted for the "new wave" bop, but many retraced musical history by taking the blues, folk, R & B and soul to whole new levels. Vinyl records were still being pressed. It was the age of the "Garage Band". Very few of us made it big. Many simply played for enjoyment, and still play today.

We'll try to keep you updated as to who's playing where and when, but if you still play, please email us with your old band/new band name, the type of music you're playing today, the dates and times! The admin would be glad to post them for you.

Sounds Like: I'm going to let the bands decide who they wanted or thought they sounded like. Lots of our bands had original sounds, original songs, and their very own flavor. Write to me and give me some pointers!
